allow the ground to find its brutal way to me - Jack - 07-06-2024

What Jack is after, this time, is conveniently around the Brittlebone Bridge, but unlike last time, he has absolutely zero intentions of going into the Oerwoud himself. (Not directly, anyway). And so, letting The Ark hover above the bridge and its curtains of rope-like vines and fuck knows what other horrors, the captain has thrown thick rope over the sides of the hull, allowing his crew the pleasure of the danger.

Waiting for them to descend and collect the (very last, he imagines, given the state of the place) packages left for pick-up, he leans against the railing and furrows his brow. [say]"This is gonna spill towards Torchline before long,"[/say] he says, more conversation than warning, and he's sure the queen is well aware of it herself already.

RE: allow the ground to find its brutal way to me - Flora - 07-06-2024

[say]"How was it a man like you was ever in a position to fall off the Leap of Faith?"[/say] Raising her eyebrows, Flora suddenly wonders if the good captain had just been mincing his words, and really he meant nearly shoved off.

Peering down into the darkened mists, Flora's mind swiftly imagines all the sorts of horrors that might be lurking below with a technicolour intensity. She's pretty accurate too, given the void creatures she's already had to deal with. [say]"No shit."[/say] She says dryly, before sighing and rubbing between her eyebrows to ward off the oncoming headache she can feel beginning to build.

[say]"Sometimes I wonder if it wouldn't just be easier to lift Torchline up into the sky just Stormbreak is. Not forever, but..."[/say] Glancing at Jack over her shoulder, Flora's expression softens significantly. There's a time to put on a brave face, but standing before a man capable of reading her thoughts Flora thinks this isn't it. [say]"..fuck if it doesn't constantly feel like we're playing catchup. And losing."[/say]

[say]"I can't read the cliff's thoughts, love,"[/say] Jack drawls with a roll of his eyes. [say]"It gave way under me when I was up there, once."[/say] It could very nearly have ended his life, in truth, and were the captain not so often in such dangerous situations, he might have given it a touch more respect (or at least allowed it to spawn a nightmare or two).

Instead, he's more interested in the progress his crew is making - and the way the void seems to press in on all sides, as if waiting to swallow up anything that gets too close. Glancing sidelong at her at the spike of grey pain that muddies her thoughts, Jack resists the urge to drag up his mental walls, at least while Flora is still half thinking about him being shoved off something high.

It turns out to be a wise decision, given the flowing trajectory of their conversation. [say]"On the one hand I agree, but on the other it'd just put us closer to Stormbreak in the short term."[/say] AKA closer to the Reaper. [say]"You're not wrong, though. Ain't your dads meant to be good at corralling people together to make shit happen?"[/say] And why the fuck aren't they, if so?

It's just a turn of phrase, the way Astaroth had called her darling, but gods if the way Jack called her love didn't send a velvet ripple up her spine. [say]"Maybe that's what you can ask Safrin for, once you take me on a date."[/say] The Doubletake suggests with a smirk.

Because no, Jack, fucking her at a brothel hadn't counted as a date.

[say]"I don't know. They did some...testing with this ball my sister was given—"[/say] That sister being the demigoddess Seren, just in case we're keeping track, hence how Flora knew to tell Jack what abilities of his were useful and which weren't. [say]"—but other than that I have no idea."[/say] While Flora was absolutely nosy enough to wonder what was being done on Team High and Mighty, she was also more than happy to simply stay in her lane as a measly mortal and lowly queen and let those with the talents necessary to fight the battle do so.

[say]"There are a number of things I'd like to ask Safrin for - the ability to talk to rocks ain't one of them,"[/say] Jack drawls, and though his jaw feathers at the reminder - fine, yes, he does need to do that date thing - it's somewhat softened by the velvet soft ripple of feeling that glides up the length of Flora's spine.

At the ball conversation, the captain does pull a face (sounds sus, honestly), but he knows already the amount of work that has been done to try and tease out any and all weaknesses from this Starfall bullshit. But with seemingly nothing coming from it, well, here they the fuck are, he supposes. [say]"S'pose we'll find out when it's all fixed, or when we all turn purple,"[/say] he mutters.

From below, one of the crew calls out that they have secured what the captain has flown here to find, and Jack whistles sharply so they can start ascending back up towards The Ark.

[say]"No, huh?"[/say] Lifting her brows, Flora bites coyly at the inside of her lip and tilts her head. [say]"And just what are are you going to ask for?"[/say] No, she didn't think he'd tell her, but it didn't hurt to ask. At least, sometimes it didn't hurt to ask.

[say]"It isn't so bad."[/say] Flora mutters, about turning purple. As the only person to have ever been infected by the void and then cured, Flora shrugs with the sort of crisp casualness that comes from having evaded danger too many times to be bothered by it anymore. [say]"Who knows, maybe I'm immune now."[/say]

It's then that one of the thick ropes holding up the platform that Ark's crew are on, snaps. Rather, a small knot of void vipers has silently slithered their way up, masquerading as vines, before fraying the rope with their teeth. One side of the platform gave way, before the rope on the other snapped as well—a coordinated effort to be sure—a down tumbled at least two of the Ark's crew as well as the package they'd recently retrieved.

oh noOoOOoo Jack will have to sail down to the Mist Banks to retrieve his package and/or save his crew >.>

And this is where perhaps Jack will surprise the Doubletake, because rather than stony silence, he gestures around to The Ark and her star-filled sails. [say]"At the moment she can only fly at night. I'd like to make it a little less dependent on the time of day,"[/say] he says. Safrin had, after all, been the one to get the ship airborne in the first place - hence why her tits are bared proudly at the prow of the ship.

[say]"Maybe,"[/say] he rumbles, of Flora's immunity to turning purple, not that Jack has any intention of trying it out to see for himself if there's any merit to it. The captain has control issues, what can he say? Speaking of which, as the sound of a rope snapping reaches his ears, Jack is immediately in action, snapping his fingers for someone to take the wheel as he vaults off the quarterdeck to see what's going on.

Naturally, he reaches the rail just in time for his crew and platform and cargo to go plummetting off into the foliage, and the captain's steam of curses are enough to have other members of the Ark backing away. [say]"Bring her down,"[/say] he grates to the man at the helm. [say]"Low as you can."[/say]

To the Mistbanks they go, then.
