[RQ] Prismatic protection - Hadama - 07-21-2024
And so they returned to the Rainbow Road to gather stones for the third and final time in their quest to protect Torchline from the Void. They came by land and by sea, by foot and by fin, converging once more upon the steamy stretch of multicolored coastline.
Hadama had come prepared in his Mer-form with large, heavy-duty burlap sacks to pass out to each person who arrived. The traditional bribe of food had been extended to Kaiden, who by now was a hardened veteran of this particular task. The offer had been made to Seren and Flora as well: a full course brunch once they had finished their work.
"Spread out and collect rocks in as many colors as you can find," the Tidebreaker instructed. "Choose sizes of between one and two fists. And be wary. The Void creatures have been pushed out of Haulani and the Ocean. There may be more of them on the Coast than before." Between the Oerwoud's encroachment and Vi's protection added to Rae's it was the last place for the corrupted plants and animals to congregate in Torchline.
Outside of Starfall, of course. The island sat like a giant caveat to all their work on the horizon.

The queen hardly needed to be bribed but of course she wasn't going to turn down food, especially knowing her co-leader's culinary skills. Even if Hadama wasn't the one actually preparing the food, she doubted if he'd let anything not up to his standards be served under his watch.
[say]"I suppose it's about time I helped out with this portion of things, huh?"[/say] The queen remarked, flashing Hadama a bright smile as she waggled her fingers in his direction. Having received the collected rocks several times now, Flora could reasonably piece together what was expected of her, but she still listened carefully as the Tidebreaker explained.
[say]"On it! Oh, also.."[/say] Wandering over to the water, Flora relayed the conversation she'd had previously with Seren about the orb. [say]"So basically once I get some ancients to use their magic on it, we're good to go."[/say] Waggling her eyebrows, the queen grinned brightly.

Standing next to her sister, Seren busied herself with tying up her flowing trousers above the knees while Hadama gave his speech. It was a straight forward task, easy to remember, and hopefully it would be done without a hitch.
Accepting the bag, she offered the only stranger in the group a smile, returned to her childhood fascination with the merfolk by Kaiden's presence. [say]"I am simply happy to be of use, honestly. Today as well. Shall we go, then?"[/say] Shaking out the bag she strolled off towards the water's edge and a couple of fist sized cobbles in bright hues of red and yellow. Transferring them to the bag, the weight was reduced by a nudge of gravity; normally sweaty task didn't have to be unpleasant.
Seren uses gravity pulse to lighten her sack as she collects rocks.

Kaiden knew that they were yet again being bribed by the King. But priorities were priorities for a reason, and Hadama quickly figured out this mershark's number one. They'd have to let it be for now. When they arrived, Kaiden noted the two women on the shore. They'd seen Flora a few times, but the other woman was a complete stranger. And Kaiden didn't like the way that she looked at them. Taking their bag they swiftly dove under the water to avoid conversation. In hindsight, perhaps they'd be able to find larger stones deeper down.
They reluctantly kept Hadama's warning in mind. If a void creature arrived, the mer would shove their toxic gum down its throat. But maybe that didn't work on infected creatures? There was only one way to find out.

"I will return the favor when we place them," Hadama assured Flora with a hint of a smile, less reserved among his friends and Torchers than he was around strangers. At the news of Seren's sphere being made of the same substance as Void crystal his steely brows rose briefly and he turned in the water to give his fellow demigoddess a bow of his head in gratitude for her generosity.

And then there was
Hadama sent a pulse of gratitude through the Attuned bond for them as well, but he did not try to make his finned friend linger amongst the landfolk. With the bags distributed and each off on their own hunts he joined the task, swimming slowly along the warm, shallow waters as he chose rocks in bright blues and soothing greens. Consciously or not he seemed to avoid the purples, however.
It was off to a great start, with rocks of the right size both plentiful and in a full rainbow of colors. Seren and Hadama were particularly successful in the areas they chose, filling their first bags quickly while Flora had to look a little harder but still managed without difficulty. But soon dark clouds boiled up above them and the first stinging drops of rain slanted down on Seren and Flora. The waters of the ocean churned around Hadama and Kaiden, but it was the mershark who was the most battered by the sudden shift in the weather as a maliciously cheerful clicking echoed through the water around them. A sharp snout tore the bottom out of Kaiden's bag and scattered the rocks they had already gathered before darting away. More dark shapes slid around and beneath the mershark, just out of reach and hard to see in the suddenly-shadowed waves as the storm built overhead.

Rock collecting is going well but Kaiden has found some unwelcome company and a storm has swiftly built up above the Rainbow Road!

Enshadowed Delphinids (common - Torchline, The Greatwood, Hollowed Grounds): Once playful Encantados, touched by the void, transform into Enshadowed Delphinids. Their vibrant pink hues now give way to an inky blackness that seems to absorb light, rendering them nearly invisible in the depths of the ocean. The mischievous nature remains, but their water magic takes on an eerie void-touched quality, capable of stirring storms and unsettling the balance of the sea. The Enshadowed Delphinids dance on the boundary between whimsical chaos and the darker currents of the void.

All was going well, until, well, it wasn't.
The sudden storm could only mean a few things, and so it was with her eyes narrowed towards the sea that Flora gazed out for telltale pink or black shapes of approaching encantados or delphinids. Spying only dark shapes beneath the water, the queen glanced towards

Kaiden felt but ignored Hadama's pulse except for a nod. The collecting seemed to be going well until a dark shape flickered in the edge of their vision. Whipping around, the mershark gritted their teeth at the ominous shapes. [say]I see enshadowed delphinids.[/say] Because, of course, they couldn't have nice things and find a friend for Blue in peace.
Clutching their bag of rocks tightly, Kaiden swam backward and away from the void creatures, picking up some more rocks as they went. They considered trying to attack the void-infected creatures, but there were just too many of them and the mershark could reluctantly admit to themselves that their magic wasn't strong enough to do anything.

Collecting items of interest was a longstanding tradition for the young demigod, a childhood pastime she had never outgrown. If the occasional colorful rock missed the bag and slipped into another kind of pocket, who was to know or care?
But unfortunately the day was taking a turn for the less pleasant. With the onset of bad weather, Seren's attention turned towards the sea and to her companions. Believing their assessment of the cause without hesitation, she turned her gaze towards the now overcast sky.
A star fell on her command, and as it fell it split into two before splashing into the water near her. Taking the form of sharp toothed and vicious barracuda, they darted alongside her as Seren waded as får out into the water as she dared, lamenting her lacking reach.
[say]"Chase them off!"[/say] she instructed her summoned star critters, hoping they would be enough to at least distract the delphinids.

"We will handle it," Hadama assured Flora with a solemn nod, emerald eyes squinting against the wind whipped up by the localized storm. "If you will continue with the rocks." As she had said to Seren, the sooner they were done with the task, the better, and splitting their energies would ensure that at least some forward progress continued on their quest.
He did not think the other landwalkers could hear
The star-critters that
Hadama, in the water with Kaiden, quickly found himself also drawing the attention of the rest of the pod. He summoned his Gravity Spikes to lance down upon the enshadowed creatures but their darting speed and the diffusion of the water made them difficult targets. One delphinid was crushed down through the shallow water into the rocks below but the rest scattered safely away, only to regroup and redouble the strength of the storm.
Low rolls all around. The delphinids are continuing to interfere with the rock gathering and are bullying Kaiden in particular, but some of the pod have been successfully distracted by Seren's critters! The storm is increasing in strength, making it harder for Flora and Seren to work this round.

Not one to mind a little rain, the sudden onslaught of wind and arrival of a proper storm had the Doubletake gritting her teeth. Why couldn't just one thing be easily done around here? Sighing and glancing over her shoulder towards the two in the waves, Flora bit at the inside of her cheek before lobbing her signet ring towards the shoreline. As the Tide Jaguar appeared, snarling and with its ears flattened against its skull, all the queen could hope was that seeing a recognizable predator would distract the Delphinids from their continued fuckery long enough for Hadama to dispatch them.
Turning her attention back to the Road, the queen was far less picky in her stone selection this go around, merely wanting to fill her sack as quickly as she could.
Flora sends her Tide Jaguar towards the shoreline to serve as a distraction and keeps collecting rocks!

The damn delphinids were trickier than Kaiden thought. As they tried to evade the tainted creatures and keep their rocks, the aquatic menaces kept getting in the way. The rest of the group came to their aid and the mershark refused to be a damsel in distress. Swinging around with a sharp flick of their tail, Kaiden bared their teeth at the enshadowed pod.
Magic was far from their strength. But there wasn't time to shift and Kaiden didn't want to put something disgusting in their mouth by biting the creatures. Shoving their hand at the pod, they tried to envision a wave of water forcing the creatures away from themself.

Maintaining her critters and letting them dart this way and that around the delphinids, the brunt of Seren's focus this time stayed on collecting the rocks. With so many friends around, it seemed just as efficient to get the job done and hurry away from here as to fight a troublesome opponent.
Kneeling by a washed up pile of debris, Seren dug into the sandy, dirty pile and didn't stop to consider colors before throwing the rocks into her bag. A quick communication with Umbra har the dragon bounding towards her, only to stop and start digging alongside her. He wanted to fight the void delphinids, but Seren was adamant; this was just as important.
Seren keeps distracting the delphinids with her Star critters and tries to gather as many rocks as she can, with Umbra's help.

Through the power of friendship a very useful regional luck bonus, the team finally gained the upper hand against the Delphinids. Flora's Jaguar was enough of a threat to distract the corrupted dolphins from their harassment of Kaiden, and the storm only slowed her rock collecting but was unable to stop it. Stone by stone her bag grew fuller and heavier.
Which left Hadama batting cleanup, a task he pursued with his usual stoic efficiency. A second volley of Gravity Spikes proved much more effective, this time striking several targets. With half their number down the power of the storm began to fade, and it broke completely as the survivors fled with a frightened, angry clicking from the Tide Jaguar and barracuda that threatened them.
"Let us finish filling our bags," the Tidebreaker rumbled, giving Flora and Seren a nod of gratitude for their intervention before he went back to his own, swifter, gathering of stones. "And protect our coast."

Kaiden needs a new bag but Flora and Seren are almost done! Fill those bags and let's bring it home!

[say]"Just think, this is the last time we're going to have to do this!"[/say] The queen calls out, trying to encourage herself as much as everyone else. Flora might have been inclined to fake a lot of things, but right now she hated this task likely as much as everyone else did, the rain and delphinids notwithstanding. But if it meant finally getting the void out of Torchline, they could all stick with it a little bit more.
Opting for quantity over quality, having deposited the stones several times now Flora knew that precision wasn't really the name of the game and so having more to work with than less was better, she continued to stuff her sack as full as she could while being mindful that eventually she (or someone else) was going to have to try and lift it.
Flora keeps on keepin' on!
