[SE] Gotta seed it to believe it - Talyson - 07-23-2024

The problem hadn't been finding a place to plant the seeds. It had been narrowing them down, which had been scary enough to think about. There were so many areas that could use a little hope on the margins of the infections, and others that they couldn't even reach, but in the end Tal had chosen to protect where his house was built. The big river that emptied out of the Sallow Swamp rode the edges of King's End, curling past the Barrows, along the shores of Mourn, and around the horn of Queen's Gambit. He wasn't entirely sure where everyone else was planting, but Mourn seemed like the best bet for a start.

He and Alys were traveling together on the Peregrine again, but he'd dropped a note to Sah in Halo, letting the other man know that the pair would be home for a couple of days if the Wild Thunder wanted to find them.

And of course, when Sah did show up, Tal was perfectly happy to drag him along to do a little spring planting down by the coast.

"How far apart d'you think we should put 'em?" he asked his best frenemy, sticking his spade deep into the warming earth and pulling out another clump of dirt. "I mean... they're not gonna get as big as th'original, right?"

RE: [SE] Gotta seed it to believe it - Sah - 07-23-2024

Sah had been surprised at the note but after figuring out a few logistics, had made his way over. Arriving in a flash of lightning, he'd met up with Talyson, who was waiting for him. They'd eventually made their way out to plant their seeds, and the Abandoned eyed their surroundings as he considered the man's question. [say]"I'd wager that they won't be as big, but they'll probably be decent in size."[/say] He tilted his head and roughly judged the trees around them. Sah hummed when he spotted what he was looking for, [say]"Maybe we can go with the assumption that they'll be comparable to the maples over there?"[/say]

The trio of maples that he gestured to were surrounding a small clearing with various offerings and benches. The trees were a respectable size but nowhere near as tall or broad as some trees in places such as the Greatwood. Basing their seeds off them would hopefully be a decent estimation.

The shallow earth moved easily though it was heavy, wet with Flowerbirth rains and smelling of new life. The deeper earth was more stubborn, however, where Deepfrost's chill lingered, and Tal had to put his back into breaking it up as he worked it loose for future roots to more easily tunnel through.

He followed Sah's gesture and scowled thoughtfully as he measured their height roughly by eye. "Could be," he agreed, brows furrowing. "I guess it's th'best we got. Wish these things had come with any sort o' instructions..." Aside from their ginormous parent and a vague sense of pro-Caido, anti-Void sentiment about them.

He lifted another shovelfull of dirt out of the hole and paused to eyeball the depth before sneaking a glance over at his frenemy. "So, hey. Are y'doin' any better?" he asked, with all of the subtlety and tact of a ghost whale in a china shop. "With th'whole Mel thing?"

RE: [SE] Gotta seed it to believe it - Sah - 08-08-2024

Sah shrugged, [say]"I'd be more concerned if they did come with instructions."[/say] That would mean it was far easier to fuck up. Though children didn't come with instructions either, and they well...

Shaking off his thoughts, Sah channeled his earth magic to create a decent-sized hole. It might have been a tad too large, but he was going to be filling it in any way. It was as he was crouched down placing his seed that Tal asked his question.

The Wild Thunder glanced up with a blank expression. He didn't know whether to laugh or smack the courier. After a heartbeat, he let out a heavy sigh, [say]"I guess."[/say] Tsking, he began to cover up his seed and smooth out the soil around it with his hands, [say]"If I think about it, it hurts. But I no longer obsess over it every waking moment."[/say]

Sah stood up and brushed the dirt off his hands, [say]"I don't expect or deserve Melita's forgiveness. But we did talk. Kind of. And I think we're as good as we can be given the situation."[/say] He smiled ruefully, [say]"She doesn't seem to want my head at least."[/say] That was all that he could hope for.

The Abandoned did have to suppress the urge to smile as he recalled Safrin's approval and near glee over his actions. It had been the catalyst that finally let him heal as much as he had.

"Huh. Y'mean, like, printed on th'rinds...?" Tal's nose wrinkled up as he tried to imagine words formed from pigment or maybe raised in nutty wrinkles like the outside of a walnut, and whatever vision popped into his head made him shiver. "...Okay, yeah, that'd be creepy," he agreed.

Of course Sah flaunted his magic and did it the easy way, but Tal consoled himself with the knowledge that his seed would know that it had been planted with confusion love and watered with sweat and hard work. He set it gently into the hole he'd been digging, focused on the task and oblivious to his friend's blank look. He heard the sigh, though, and as he covered the seed over he glanced back to the hunter before pushing the dirt back over it and patting it down flat.

"That's good," he affirmed confidently. "Th'not obsessin' part. An' the talkin' part." Even if it had the 'kind of' caveat on it. Tal knew how conversations with the Honeybee could be, even before he'd fucked up at the Hanged Man. He joined Sah in standing and dusting himself off. "Figure you're better off'n me. She pro'bly still does want my head," he added, and it was his turn to look a bit glum.

It only lasted for a moment though before he shook it off and retrieved his shovel. "Ready t'head back? Y'can tell me how th'kids are doin' while we fly." Well, he had a pretty good idea of how Soleil was doing at least since they were in the same guild. "What's Luka up to these days, anyways?"

RE: [SE] Gotta seed it to believe it - Sah - 08-18-2024

Sah used his water magic to give the freshly planted seeds their first drink before sending Talyson a confused look, 'What did you do to Maea?" The courier certainly had a habit of burning bridges, didn't he? Tal could be infuriating, but they'd managed to sort out their shit so far. All it usually took was a good smack to the back of the head to realign his common sense. Usually, by Boreal it seemed
What the fuck was everyone else doing? Trying to talk things out? That would require more than one functioning brain and Tal sure as hell wasn't bringing it.

[say]"Sounds like a plan."[/say] Sah followed the courier back to the ship with a soft smile. Thinking about his kids was always enjoyable and he hoped that Tal was ready for a trip back full of bragging. [say]"Luka is doing well."[/say] The Wild Thunder ran a hand through his hair, [say]"I think he's...conflicted somewhat. He hasn't found an ambition or dream to drive him, and I think he's feeling that absence. He's been trying his hand at different pursuits and skills, but nothing seems to have clicked for him yet."[/say]

He chuckled, [say]"He'll find it eventually, and when he does, I have no doubt that he'll be unstoppable."[/say] Sah honestly wasn't sure what it might be, but the Abandoned knew his son. When Luka was motivated, he was as formidable as his sister.

"Maea? Uhh... nothin'." Tal scrunched up his nose, giving Sah a concerned side-eye. Had the hunter hit his head again? Or had the fight with the ursur left some lingering brain damage. The courier sincerely hoped not; his frenemy couldn't afford to lose any more when he hadn't had any to spare to begin with! "She helped me clear some Void Lotuses out o' th'Suvahasi recently. We're pretty good, unless she's told y'different...?" He couldn't imagine Maea bitching to Sah behind his back about him; he trusted the pale Ancient lady to tell him directly if they were having issues, and last he heard they were still fast friends and adventuring buddies. Hail, she was even his guild leader now that Edmund had retired!

But he shook off his worries for the moment and led they way back to the ship so they could both scamper up the rope ladder. The two-seater was almost refreshingly spacious without a multitude of oversized companions sitting on top of each other, and Tal was glad that they'd left the 'kids' back at the house to romp.

The Peregrine rose high enough to catch the crossbreeze and Tal bustled around the deck, adjusting the sail and rigging while Sah boasted about his son. The courier listened with a lopsided smile, letting his frenemy ramble on as they made the journey back to the house that he and Alys had built, even if he didn't get to spend as much time there as he'd hoped back in the beginning.
