RE: it's a dream when we work as a team - Varus - 03-19-2022

Thought he was still in hearing distance, oops.

Honestly, Varus doesn’t have a whole lot of experience when it comes to preventing and crafting traps. What he does have experience in, is from the other side. Slipping through the cracks to get in close, so he sits back on his heels, staring at the animal paths, arms folded across his chest and he simply puts on that thinking cap of his.

He’s coming up empty time and time again, so he gathers the spots he’s designated, returns to the group with a slight frown. “[say]Not sure that’s gonna work.[/say]” He comments, about the scent. “[say]There’s uhhh, that strange kind of tumbleweed I noticed when I first got back. Nasty little shits.[/say]” He pauses, snapping the fingers on his fleshy hand as the thoughts hit him. “[say]Could it be possible to keep a few of them around the barrier’s edge as a ward against the animals? They’ll know to avoid it, but perhaps if we’re lucky, someone else barreling through might not notice it right away?[/say]” To this he looks at both Amun and Isla for their input.

Varus suggests setting up little hoards of tangleweeds to ward off the animals and act as an extra little trap/help for hiding the caltrops.

RE: it's a dream when we work as a team - Serendipity - 03-22-2022

Varus has a point. Now that Isla 's poison is likely to stay in the caltrops, what's to stop an animal or two from impaling themselves, which will only attract more predators who come to feast on their bodies?

Tangleweed might be a good way to hide them without being too obvious. Of course you'd have to got and corral a bunch first. What do we think? Any better ideas, or are we off to try and wrangle a bunch of semi-sentient brambles?

RE: it's a dream when we work as a team - Amun - 03-22-2022

As the modified caltrops worked, Amun shot Isla a grin. [say]"I promise I do have those occasionally doc."[/say] He began to work on making the rest of the caltrops with the hollow centers for her to fill with her medicines. Glancing up from his work now and then, he glanced between her and Varus as they discussed the possibilities for keeping animals and people away.

Sighing, the potter shrugged one shoulder. [say]"I'm not sure anything we planted would have enough time to grow before..."[/say] Voice trailing off, he grimaced. [say]"At least tangleweed is already around here. Also, wouldn't introducing an entirely new species also wreak havoc on the ecosystem?"[/say] He arched an eyebrow at the two of them. [say]"So for what it's worth, I vote tangleweed."[/say]

Amun continues to make the hollow caltrops and votes for tangleweed if they're voting.

RE: it's a dream when we work as a team - Isla - 03-24-2022

[say]"I'm sure,"[/say] Isla says in a lightly teasing tone, grinning across at Amun and finishing up the caltrops now that they seem to have worked out the kinks with their construction. She glances up as Varus returns, raising a brow and nodding at his input. [say]"Mm, it could wreak havoc and we have no idea whether or not it would even take,"[/say] she agrees. [say]"I think tangleweed is a good idea as well."[/say]

Straightening up from her finished caltrops, she smiles between them. [say]"We'll need a couple of branches to try and corral them around here, when we're ready,"[/say] she says, pointing out a few suitable candidates in the deadfall. [say]"We don't want to go touching them. And we should probably put the caltrops in position first, right?"[/say]

Isla also votes tangleweed, suggests they put the caltrops in place, and points out a couple of branches they could use to corral the tangleweed.

RE: it's a dream when we work as a team - Varus - 03-28-2022

Tangleweed! That’s the name he’s missing. But as soon as Amun fills it in and Isla agrees with the idea, he finds a small amount of relief in the fact that it could work. Of course, it would take some fiddling to get it just right, but the point is that it could be enough of something normal to not raise flags while also being essentially the perfect image of hiding in plain sight.

“[say]Agreed.[/say]” Varus rumbles, collecting the caltrops and returning to the spaces he’d marked out, moving to set the pieces in place with his metal arm, taking advantage of a bit more strength to push them into places he thinks the tangleweed would thrive yet also be a perfect spot for someone to be taken by surprise.

Varus takes some of the caltrops to go and place them down in a few spaces that he thinks are good for the tangleweed to thrive, and when he’s done he’s ready to go and grab some branches to corral the tangleweed!

RE: it's a dream when we work as a team - Serendipity - 04-02-2022

This is going to be fun, I can tell.

Well team, lets go wrangle up some tangleweed, shall we? There's enough of it around to be sure; pick a direction and you'll find some. Are you going to go as a group, opting for a three vs 1 approach to make things easier (but resulting in fewer weeds gathered), or the opposite? Surely you big strong ascended can handle some carnivorous sticks?

Whatever you decide, have it.

State if you're going as a group, as a 2/1, or solo, and how you try and corral your tangleweed(s).

RE: it's a dream when we work as a team - Amun - 04-02-2022

As they all agreed to go off to seek some tangleweed, Amun dusted off his hands. Straightening up from where he'd been perched making caltrops, he saunters towards the part of the Outskirts where the nasty plant-things could be found. [say]"I'll leave you two on your own. You can call it a date and thank me later."[/say] Shooting them a wink he headed a short distance away.

Trying to find a cluster of tangleweed, he stripped off his shirt. If he found said group he'd take aim at them with one palm. Then he'd fire a flashbang and hope that it worked on them. That done, he'd gather as many of them up in his shirt as possible.

Amun goes off on his own. He takes off his shirt as he looks for a group of tangleweed clumped together. If he finds a group, he fires his flashbang at them, and then tries to gather as many tangleweed in his shirt as he can.

RE: it's a dream when we work as a team - Varus - 04-05-2022

“[say]Oh how kind of you.[/say]” Varus rumbles to Amun with a wink, moving to step beside Isla and offer her a hand to help her up from where she’d been working on the caltrops. Once she’s up, he laces his arm through hers and flashes a fanged grin toward Amun as he leans in to whisper to Isla’s ear. “[say]How does he know we won’t get distracted on the way back?[/say]” Maybe the room has an infestation of tangleweeds, wouldn’t that be something?

Regardless, alongside Isla the Captain makes his way toward what is hopefully a cluster of tangleweeds, hoping that he might be able to take the brunt of their tangle-attempts with the use of his metal arm. It’s that hand that reaches out to try and corral them to head in the direction they need them to be and hopefully they don’t cling to him all that much in his attempts.

Varus goes with Isla to find a cluster of tangleweeds! Provided they find any, he’ll try to use his metal arm upgrade to keep them from sticking to him in his attempts to corral them.

RE: it's a dream when we work as a team - Isla - 04-05-2022

[say]"He doesn't know,"[/say] Isla purrs, accepting the hand up and lacing her arm through her captain's, falling into step beside him. [say]"Though we've spent enough time on these caltrops and figuring this all out, so I feel like we ought to at least see the job through."[/say] And given that corralling tangleweed doesn't sound enormously difficult, perhaps it won't take too long.

[say]"Afterwards, though,"[/say] Isla continues, grinning across at Varus, [say]"we can always double check the room, just to make sure there's no tangleweed infestation."[/say] Speaking of which, she lets him go so he might go about wrangling the creatures, grabbing up a nearby branch to sweep them along in his wake.

Isla lets Varus do all the hard word (har har har) and grabs a branch to sweep the tangleweed along.

RE: it's a dream when we work as a team - Serendipity - 04-07-2022

Well, well. Look at you go, Amun. More enamoured and confused by the sudden pulse of light than properly disoriented, the few balls of sentient brambles grow still enough for Amun to capture two! (They are quite large though, about the size of a large beach ball).

So long as Varus and Isla don't get too carried away with one another, they'll find their tactic slowgoing and semi-successful. The tangleweeds aren't presently all that interested in being herded along, and with along a stick and a metal arm to corral them, it's rather easy for them to bounce about or utilize the wind to carry themselves out of the ascended's reach.

Amun, do you try and gather more Tangleweeds? Or do you begin to place them around the caltrops that Varus has already placed?

Isla/Varus, you can keep going the way you are, but it's a bit like herding cats.

RE: it's a dream when we work as a team - Serendipity - 04-07-2022

A sudden bout of mist begins to swirl rather charmingly around your heels. It’s gone nearly as quickly as it came, followed by the indistinct sound of faraway laughter.

RE: it's a dream when we work as a team - Amun - 04-07-2022

Amun obviously didn't have any insights into the minds of what were essentially overgrown bacteria, so he couldn't comment on the tangleweeds interest or lack thereof in his flashbang. All he knew was that two of them stayed still long enough to let him scoop them up in his shirt.

A firm believer in quitting while he was ahead, he turned to go deposit them by the caltrops. However, he cocked his head to the side as what sounded like laughter rang out in the distance. Frowning, he shook his head and continued on to drop off his collection before the escaped or tried to eat him.

Amun choose to deposit the two tangleweeds he's caught by the caltrops.

RE: it's a dream when we work as a team - Isla - 04-07-2022

It is like herding cats, and Isla turns to cock her head at the laughter she hears on the wind, glancing back at Varus. [say]"Spooky,"[/say] she remarks, but of course it's Leafchange and they're in the Hollowed Grounds and war, etc., so that's all kind of par for the course. The distraction has only given the tangleweeds more of a chance to escape, though, and she huffs and drops her stick with a grumble of annoyance.

[say]"Alright,"[/say] she mutters, rubbing her hands together to generate her static boost. [say]"Come on, get going."[/say] Reaching out, she tries to zap at the nearest tangleweed to get it going.

Isla changes tactics and uses her static boost on the tangleweeds to try and prod them in the right direction!

RE: it's a dream when we work as a team - Varus - 04-09-2022

Varus can’t help the very obvious shiver that races down his spine – purely for show of course, to accompany Isla’s spooky comment, flashing her a fanged smirk shortly after. These tangleweeds are certainly proving to be difficult, though, and he finds that his arm isn’t that much of a boon when it comes to trying to corral them together, so he follows his lovely lady’s lead and stands back a bit to aim his pointer finger toward the edge of one of the tangleweeds – not to hit it, but to incite it.

He activates his laser to draw a little line in the ground, trying to use the heat of it or the light of it to try and push the tangleweeds in the direction that they’ve chosen, hoping he won’t have to do it too many times. After all, nothings more suspicious than lines etched into the ground.

Varus follows Isla’s lead and uses his lasers to try and draw a line close to the tangelweeds to get them to move where they need them to!
