let the boughs b r e a k - Court Official - 02-14-2021

You are the shiny new model. You come with all the bells and whistles, your kinks having been ironed out. The monsters are the chaos left in your wake, the discarded bits and scraps upon which your lives have been built. And now here you are, ready to finally sweep away the trash.

Funny, the monsters have exactly the same idea.

Like you, they have been planning. In years past they have had to lure you out with cries of help. They've banged on doors and mimicked voices, but that act is tired and predictable. So this year, they've spent their time and the few resources they have at their disposal, and they have learned one new trick.

Want to see?

This KQ consists of

Nate, Edwyn, Isla, Adam, and Kiada. The five of you have been teleported to the Labyrinth. You stand before the entrance to the maze with a hoard of monsters behind you and likely many more within.

Non-ascended inhabitants of the HG who are still in the HG may join this KQ, however ascended can only join the KQ into which they've been placed!

For this KQ you may attempt to run away/leave the KQ, but know that you might not be successful and that the consequences of this may be more dire/dangerous than should you remain.

This KQ, like all others, will be dangerous. You have the option of not joining, but know that this will effect the overall success of what the ascended are trying to achieve this LongNight!

So that nothing is missed, please include a summary of what your character currently has with them. Make sure this information is correct, as you won't be able to later add in items. For all subsequent posts, please include a summary of actions taken, and if items/upgrades/abilities are used, please copy/paste the description of the item/ability/upgrade.

You have 24 hours to reply before you will be skipped. No posting order for this round.

RE: let the boughs b r e a k - Isla - 02-14-2021

Oh.

Oh.

The seething mass of monsters pressing in on all sides is enough to overwhelm the senses, and Isla makes quick and purposeful assessment of her body, her circuitry, her physical and mental state. Maybe it's not the time, but it helps a great deal to calm her down.

The medic is in her white lab coat, having been intending to stay firmly on the defensive side of the fight. Alas, it is not to be.

[say]"I do not like this,"[/say] she says to any who are listening, though glancing over her shoulder makes it clear that retreat is just as dangerous as perseverance. She does not make the call to enter the labyrinth. She is no leader in this war, but a field surgeon.

Isla arrives with the following items and upgrades:

Portable first aid kit containing bandages, gauze, and a few surgical tools.

A manticore shift from Remi, gained in to boldly go

The world is new to you, and you to it. During PQ/PQ+/KQs/Drops, you roll with advantage on luck-based rolls and receive an extra name during drops. (In order to use this, make sure to note the ability at the bottom of each post)

RE: let the boughs b r e a k - Adam - 02-14-2021

Hardly a fan of this whole thing anyway, Adam had been especially pissed upon being whisked away to some Gods-forsaken corner of the Grounds, away from the nice safe feeling barracks and more importantly away from Pet. He had enough faith in his somewhat scary assassin husband to know he'd probably make it out of this, but being on his own was not helping. At least he recognised Nate, who he went to stand by right away.

[say]"Yeah. This fucking sucks."[/say] He agreed with Isla, peering into the Labyrinth before them. [say]"I mean, they got us where they want us, right? Do we even go in there? Can't we just say fuck you guys and leave?"[/say] Maybe that was the coward's way out, but he'd never had that kind of pride, and entering the Labyrinth felt like certain death. Still, if the group as a whole wanted to proceed, he'd go with them; they'd need all the help they could get, and he couldn't in good faith leave them to their fate (nor did he want to walk alone back through the night).

--
Adam asks if they can just run away, but will stay if the group wants to.

Adam has 2 daggers in his boots and a crossbow.
and his devastating good looks

RE: let the boughs b r e a k - Nate - 02-14-2021

Best laid plans, falling into worthlessness. Obviously. Nate grits his teeth in abject frustration, trying to not let himself grow despaired and overwhelmed immediately. At least he’d been prepared, everything he needed on his person, and then some.

There’s a sense of determination, a set to Nate’s jaw. Already they’re separated, with far less than he’d expected or wanted. [say]”Lets get out of it then.”[/say] Comes the reply, mismatched eyes darting around, but always returning to the maw of the labyrinth. [say]”I think in the labyrinth we have a better chance. There’s nothing close to us out here.”[/say]

Nate arrives with his upgrades, as well as:

A bite from Sunjata received in just bare with me and i'll be back some day i hope

Type: Dark
Fang Necklace | A necklace of sea panther teeth. These may be used once per thread to cause intimidation to nearby enemies. (Enemies will roll with disadvantage for that round).
Type: Dark
Everywhere Arrow | A sleek, obsidian arrow. Controlled by whistling, the arrow is moved and directed via a mental link with the user. Range of 15ft, works with Ascended only.
Type: Grey
Leather Jacket | A leather jacket that can reflect basic fire damage away from the wearer. Can be used again after a two post cool-off period. (Made by Deimos)
Type: Grey
Subdermal Shielding Upgrade | Lightweight biomechanical scales are embedded beneath 80% of Nate's skin. When his senses detect he's in physical danger, they rise above his dermal-layer and create a shield.
Type: Dark
Flametongue | Magic sword that sheds dim light like a torch and is warm to the touch; causes user to constantly have spice on the tongue as if they ate something fiery hot.
Type: Dark
Trident Daggers (Upgraded) | Two daggers perfectly weighted and sculpted for Sunjata. One can shoot fire in a 5ft arc and the other electricity.

RE: let the boughs b r e a k - Kiada - 02-14-2021

The last thing she expects to have happen is to be teleported from Halo and directly into the Labyrinth. A quick glance around gives her an idea of all of those that have arrived, automatically sliding toward Adam and Nate out of recognition of the two of them over everyone else. “[say]In the Labyrinth?[/say]” She questions quietly, shifting the bow on her back and patting at the throwing knives on her side to make sure they’re there.

“[say]Last time I did this, there was one that could fly. So… Keep an eye out I guess.[/say]” She shrugs, activating her armor upgrade and letting it cover her torso in a light but tough material. She preps her bow, grabbing an arrow and placing it in her bow, casting a glance toward those that have arrived, before looking beyond the group back to the way home and spying the monsters there as well. Cursing quietly under her breath, she waits for the others and takes a step toward the entrance.

Kiada takes a step toward the entrance.

She’s got her upgrades as well as the following:

A bite from Chulane from here: the system only dreams in total darkness

Type: Grey
Magic Storing Amulet | An amulet capable of storing one Abandoned magic cast at it, allowing the user to cast and control the enchantments contained within. Will break after one use. (Made by Deimos)

Filled with Mastered Water magic here: {Training} know how to resurrect

She’s activated this upgrade:

Type: Grey
Bionic Armor Upgrade | Lightweight but hard armour extends from her spine, wrapping around her upper body in a defensive sheet of armour.

RE: let the boughs b r e a k - Edwyn - 02-15-2021

The writer isn't surprised by this unexpected twist. It's what he would have done, were this his story. But this isn't a story, it's reality; normally what is real has the forethought to be dull.

[say]"The labyrinth is organic...so they shouldn't have any sort of advantage by having us in there."[/say] Edwyn comments through a forced smile. He is entirely unprepared for this sort of situation. He'd been anticipating remaining in the barracks, helping to defend doors and windows and keep everyone calm with whispered stories.

But out here? He was a writer. The pen might be mightier, but he'd kill for a sword just about now.

Edwyn has nothing :)

RE: let the boughs b r e a k - Court Official - 02-15-2021

The ground beneath slowly begins to twitch and tremor. It isn't fingers that slowly errupt, but tentacles made of cables and wire with crude digits affixed to the ends; hooves and talons emerge in the dark. With mechanisms that make horrific clicking sounds, they snap at the legs of the five as they weigh their options.

Silently the labyrinth stands. Covered in snow it is even more formidable than normal, though perhaps the ice will slow down its tricksy ways. Or perhaps not.

Suddenly, at the center of the maze comes Osozo's wailing cry. We of course know Osozo has been torn apart in the Settlement, so is this an illusion? Is it actually their body accompanied by the cries they had previously made, played on repeat? A Speaking Squirrel goes running by, holding what was once the electric-blue eye of the demigod.

Edwyn: 15/15
Adam: 64/64
Kiada: 180/180

RE: let the boughs b r e a k - Isla - 02-15-2021

[say]"I fear that we are in as much danger by attempting to leave as we are by pressing forward,"[/say] Isla murmurs to Adam, offering a small smile to those around her. The cries - terrible, agonised sounds - bring her attention up, though her brow furrows to hear them. [say]"Do not let them affect you. We do not feel pain,"[/say] she reminds them. Osozo may have been torn apart, and the mental suffering may have been real, but he ought not to have been physically hurting. Not in her medical opinion, anyway.

[say]"I am no fighter, so I will not do much good leading the way,"[/say] she remarks, narrowing her eyes at the Speaking Squirrel. [say]"But might I suggest we follow that?"[/say] As she speaks, Isla is removing a long roll of bandages from her first aid kit. Unwinding them enough for all members of their party to hold onto a piece, she offers it out should they wish to take it. [say]"To ensure we do not get lost, or separated from one another."[/say]

Isla says some sage things about Osozo and suggests they follow the Speaking Squirrel. She waits for someone to lead the way through, but also removes a roll of bandages from her first aid kit so they can each hold onto some of the fabric, making it more difficult to be separated.

RE: let the boughs b r e a k - Nate - 02-15-2021

It’s almost as if Nate doesn’t hear the agonized cries from the labyrinth, for all he reacts to them. [say]”All we can trust is what we can see. It’s probably just to psyche us out.”[/say] He’s quick to agree with Isla, to soothe any worries before they rear up.

[say]”Good idea.”[/say] Not that here’s any indication if he means the gauze or the squirrel. [say]”I’ll take the front.”[/say] Theres no hesitation in the response, in the way Nate grabs the end of the bandage and ties it to his belt, twisting once he’s sure it’s secure to take the sword and sheath off his back and press it into Edwyn’s empty hands.

Unsheathing Sunjata’s daggers, Nate steps into the labyrinth, trying to follow the apparently fluid thirsty squirrel.

Nate hands Edwyn Flametounge, ties the gauze to himself, and takes point heading into the Labyrinth

RE: let the boughs b r e a k - Edwyn - 02-16-2021

[say]"But...but what if it is him? I mean..obviously this is a trap, but it might be a trap with real bait. Right?"[/say]

He watches as the doctors seamlessly work together, one bringing out gauze and the other taking a leadership role. Not for the first time (though perhaps for the last), Edwyn wishes he had charcoal with which to draw Nate. [say]"Oh, I don't know how to use this—"[/say] He tries, but Nate is already off. Swallowing hard, the writer steps back and offers a polite smile to the rest of the group, indicating that they should go first.

Or, more accurately, that he should not go first. Nate might have just granted his wish, but that didn't make him any more capable than he'd been with empty hands.

Edwyn takes the sword, and lets the others go behind Nate. He'll tie himself in closer to the end.

RE: let the boughs b r e a k - Adam - 02-16-2021

The reminder that they couldn't feel pain actually kind of comforted Adam, even though it wasn't meant to; at least if he got fucked up this time he could just laugh through it. Drawing a knife of his own and putting it in his teeth while he grabbed the bandages (he'd practiced this for years, thinking it looked very cool, and yes, had cut his tongue often). [say]"I still think we should just fuck off, but okay. I guarantee you that ain't anyone real, though."[/say] He mostly mumbled.

Now, talking squirrels with eyeballs in their mouths weren't really his favourite, but that was at least maybe worth investigating. [say]"Is the squirrel gonna change into a big monster or something, or can we just stomp on it's tail and get it to give up?"[/say] He asked, unfamiliar with the Labyrinth or it's tricks.

-
Adam gets out a dagger and holds the bandages.

RE: let the boughs b r e a k - Kiada - 02-16-2021

Kiada is more than content to be a follower in this instance – the amount of want she has for being here is incredibly low in the first place, so she listens to Isla, watches the squirrel as it runs with a small grimace dancing along her face, watching the bandage unfold enough for her to grab onto it while listening to Edwyn’s complaint. She sidles up beside him with a feline grin. “[say]You stab them with the pointy end.[/say]” She offers him with a knowing look.

Her armor continues to remain in place, and she reaches up to ensure that the magic storing amulet is still there. And since Nate has taken point on this adventure, Kiada settles herself at the very end, casting her gaze toward Adam and the rest of them up ahead, her free hand reaching for her throwing knives at her side just in case.

Kiada keeps her upgrade active:

Type: Grey
Bionic Armor Upgrade | Lightweight but hard armour extends from her spine, wrapping around her upper body in a defensive sheet of armour.

And grabs onto the bandage, taking the very end of the group, keeping her throwing knives within reach.

RE: let the boughs b r e a k - Court Official - 02-16-2021

It's very convenient of you to all nestle together as you are, holding tight to one uninterrupted piece of cloth. So we have our marching orders: Nate, Isla, Adam, Edwyn, and Kiada, and despite the dangers around you, you've decided to follow a...squirrel. Who, according to Adam, is holding the eye of someone who ain't anyone real.

[say]this way! hurry fast![/say] The Speaking Squirrel chirps once it notices that it's being followed. It runs atop the snowy hedges, its tail fluttering as it leaves behind droplets of ascended fluids from the eye it carries.

Though you've only just entered the maze, already the entrance seems a long forgotten thing. Footsteps crunch behind you—surely that's just the five of you, right? But no...there is a crunch of steps just slightly off of the group..

In the center of the maze, Osozo continues to beg for their life, asking for death first if the dismemberment is to continue.

RE: let the boughs b r e a k - Isla - 02-16-2021

Listen, Isla didn't say it was a good idea. But when teleported outside a labyrinth and penned in by monsters, very few ideas counted as good. So off they march into the maze, the medic holding onto the bandage now tied securely to Nate's belt. The squirrel speaks and she wrinkles her nose. [say]"I am not sure it has our best interests at heart,"[/say] she murmurs, her tone wry. Because when did anything have good intentions towards them in a place like this?

Then the footsteps catch her attention, and she frowns over her shoulder. [say]"Did anyone else hear that?"[/say] she asks, engaging her optical upgrade to attempt to see through the hedges beside them. [say]"It sounded like someone following us. We could turn and face them, or move more quickly..."[/say]

Isla draws attention to the strange footsteps and tries to look through the nearest hedges for any danger. She suggests either facing the owner of the footsteps, or making haste towards the centre of the maze.

Type: Grey
Optical enhancement (upgraded) | Allows the user to see in both x-ray and infrared to a depth of 3ft.
