He always worries so much. About her, about Halo and all her people - but about himself most of all. And not in the way Evie would prefer him to. No, he always seems to worry instead about being a burden, and Evie wishes she could comfort him enough times to wear that fear down to nothingness. It hasn’t worked thus far, but Wordsworths were notoriously stubborn, so she hasn’t given up yet. Her hand squeezes back at his own with a warm smile. “Never,” she reassures with all the weight of a vow. “Taking care of you is a privilege. And you’re not too hardheaded, no matter how much I tease you.” She brings his hand up quickly to kiss at his knuckles with smiling lips before letting go so they can continue eating.
It’s a good thing they set leftovers aside ahead of time because Evie wouldn’t be able to contain herself from consuming all of it if she tried. It’s frankly delicious. The only distraction she has is the idea of timing. Mulling it over as she scrapes the last few crumbs of fish onto her fork, Evie considers the giant calendar she has on her wall in the Council Hall. “How about next week? I don’t have any plans down for either of us then.” And it would allow them time to get Warden duties covered and pack for the journey.
