He might have attempted to say something in defense of neat alcohol - heaven forbid he mention that he also took his alcohol straight, lest she get other ideas he was certain he didn't want to contemplate, or ask questions that he had no desire to go into detail on - but Flora continued with her feigned innocence and caught the mermanta off guard, all clever commentary washed away in the laughter that followed.

He regained control of himself and reached up to flick a little water from the corner of his eye, his grin lingering. "Indeed. A pity it was made anonymously. I would like to thank whoever made it." Emerald eyes sparkled as he glanced over to his friend, meeting her innocence with his own.

The mirth faded and it was Flora who brought up a more serious topic, but one worth the mermanta's full consideration. He didn't mind the implication of his age; someone had once said something about mileage which applied to him in a better way than most. Her concerns for the future, however, drew a slow nod from the Tidebreaker as his smile faded to thoughtfulness. "Mmn. Dygra's intentions are a mystery," he said at last, slowly, as if he tested each word before releasing it. "But the Ancients do not seem to be more dangerous than human or Merfolk who cause trouble." There were always those who craved chaos and violence, regardless of species. But that hadn't been her question, and he took a final sip of his mimosa, draining the glass before setting it beside him.

"If we are lucky, we will have a few more years of peace. The current rulers of the lands are sensible. And no one profits from war. But rulers can change. And no one can predict the gods." Whether Rae, Dygra, or something else that had fallen out of their histories in the generations since the first great War.

"Have you learned much about the Ancients?" He turned his head to look at her curiously, wondering if the Hanged Man's owner had perhaps gleaned some useful gossip from her customers. "There was one at the opening night party..." All fanged grin and boldness, as he recalled.

"Such a pity." Flora agrees, her smile one of thinly veiled smugness. For all of her glitz and glam, approval was what the Doubletake craved above all else, thanks for the daddy issues, Remi, so it was that Hadama's tongue-in-cheek endorsement of her ideas had Flora feeling warm and fuzzy in a way that the champagne in her drink just couldn't match.

Hadama's reply began more or less as Flora would have expected, given how politically correct and linguistically careful she took the mermanta to be. In turn, he might have expected the playful eye-roll she offered him as a sign he should get to an answer before she turned old and gray. "The gods profit. Or at least, they don't seem to mind." She murmured, kicking out her foot again and inspecting the ripples which followed closely. "No more outside competition from the Voice."

As for the ancient at her opening? Scrunching up her face and looking suddenly quite girlish for the resulting expression, Flora can only groan and shake her head. "Ew, Danta?" Sipping in a breath over her teeth, the Doubletake just sneers down at her knees. "He's gross." Not least of all because he'd once turned down her advances and then fucked her mother in a closet, but never mind. "Isla's an ancient too, and she was there as well, but she's lovely." This is said with the sort of youthful longing that suggests Flora would very much like to be just like Isla one day. Sans Sunjata drama, of course.

He saw no problem with being old or grey, but perhaps Flora wasn't quite ready to join him in the prime of middle age, so he did eventually decide on an answer, however uncertain it was. He was no fortune teller, to predict the future in the motions of a school of fish or the flight of hels above the water, but he could understand the desire to know and plan for what lay ahead. Flora's point was well-taken, however, and he inclined his head in sober acknowledgment of who, indeed, had profited from the last War.

Or two.

Danta elicited a far stronger reaction than he would have expected and his lips twitched at the Doubletake's unvarnished opinion of the... bold young man who had briefly tried to accost him. "Mmn. He did not leave a favorable impression," Hadama agreed. "But I did not meet any others. Does Isla come to the Hanged Man often?" Perhaps she would be willing to indulge his curiosity. Even if not, if Flora vouched for her it would still be a pleasant conversation. Then the memory of that name rang a certain bell and he paused thoughtfully. "Was that the name of the ruler of the Hollowed Grounds before the War?"

'Blech.' Flora confirms, pushing out her tongue as if the thought of Danta was a bad taste she might spit out. "Mmm, she does now. She used to live with Sunjata in King's End, but....." The theatrical grimace on Flora's lips combined with the raising of her eyebrows seemed to signal that there had been drama between the two. "I'm trying to convince her to move to Torchline, actually." The girl adds with a shrug.

"Isla? Yeah, she was. I think it was her and Sunjata, but I could be wrong. His name is like, taboo with my family, soooooo." Flora gives a rather youthful shrug. She liked the Flood well enough, but certainly, his was not a name that was passed around the dinner table on the few occasions her family ever actually got together.

Drama? Hadama's expression might have remained politely serene but his eyes gleamed with interest. "I will offer her an invitation as well," he murmured, intrigued. Still, if she was a friend of Flora he was all the happier to have her in their coastal paradise.

And besides, it wasn't just the leadership of Torchline that had become a bit of a sea cucumber convention.

Sunjata was a name he hadn't heard in a while, and he nodded thoughtfully as the demigod was declared persona non grata with the Taliesins. "Indeed." There were stories there, too, he was sure. For now he pushed away from the edge of the canal and turned to face Flora with a smile in his eyes. "If you send word the next time Isla is at the Hanged Man, I will come. And I will take you shopping in the Spiral Marketplace when you have time."

But both circumstances were adventures for another day.
