The darkness hums to her, screaming and writhing within her that the roses are meant to be destroyed, to burn in smoke of a flame she no longer possesses. So she must adapt, lingering in the trees, hidden by boughs of wintery snow and remaining foliage. At least she has the dark part of her feathers that run down the edges of her beak, concealing the blackness from her eyes – but it does nothing to stop the dripping liquid from the end of her beak, the way it coats her feathers, mind, heart, soul.She does not recognize the eagle, but she knows the otter, and something seems oddly familiar about the wings that sprout on the manticore. And so she calculates, an aerial battle between eagle and vulture? To try and swoop down and fling the otter away from her plant? Or to swipe the rose out from the Manticore’s paws? She makes a plan, and begins to spread her wings right when a fox darts out of the shadows – aimed directly at the otter.
There’s a fit of anger within her, and she wants to cry out at the fox, to flight and flay, before she realizes he is interrupting the planting. And she takes to the air, full of malice and frustration, circling once in the high skies before diving hard and fast toward the manticore, sharp talons outstretched to grab the rose to carry it away and destroy it, destroy the evidence of a pitiful attempt at fixing it. A guttural call leaves her beak, a small amount of black ink flying from it as she does it, swooping in close and fast.
