The blow leaves her winded, but it is what happens next that takes her breath away and makes her choke. Rising up into human skin, Amalia can only look on in confusion as Ronin snatches up her shield. "No," she whispers, horror in her eyes, lurching forward to snatch it from him, to cling to the precious silver slab.
But she is panting too heavily to move quickly, and though she runs after him the blighted king is far too fast. He splits in two, and Amalia is left helpless, already having lost this bout, having lost something so terribly dear. Sinking to her knees in the snow, the baker plunges her fists into the ground, angry and saddened, frightened and alone.
Then she stands and backtracks to find her staff, ready to leave this hellscape behind.
