MELITA
Despite misgivings, trials, or tribulations, despite the herald of blight stinging over her veins, or any other modicums not quite reaching their hearts, their songs swell and rise. They were beacons to those pure of heart and mind, ditties and strains (even the ones clearly inappropriate for more innocent ears), reaching across the surface of their world, of their land, of their earth and sky. On their tempestuous eaves, on their mercurial whims, nothing else seemed to matter – precious commodities and stores, ready, willing, and waiting. Then came the unearthly, ethereal glow, the shimmer amongst snow and powder, across rime and ice. Gentle creatures, imploring from glades and hidden lairs, arriving at the brink of the wood line, staring across the void, before shuffling and heading towards the town, some pausing nearby, perhaps looking for another handout of food, asking for scratches, kind and sweet and innocent.
Melita stoked a sigh of relief, a sensation of triumph that hadn’t been there since long before the blight’s plight on her soul. “Well done everyone!” She whispered, her face enshrined and enshrouded in awe, in reverie, in luminescence. “Thank you for everything you’ve done. Hopefully this will get them to stay for LongNight.” And hopes were such fragile things – but with these ramparts in place, perhaps they had more than luck to see them through the eternal evening.
