The moment he says he is not excusing her Amalia's smile falters, sensing the unsaid but that lingers right behind his teeth. He does not meet her gaze, perhaps, but her eyes never leave his face, her own expression growing harder as he continues to explain her history back to her, as though she were a foolish child and not a woman born into this war.

His declaration that he wants to serve softens her a little, dulls the righteous flame in her breast. "So have I," Amalia admits, smiling ruefully into her cup. "It's why I try to serve the gods. To help people. Though I'm better... better with them than with humans, I think."
