Remi can't hear Wessex, nor can he see that well as she descends down towards him. For all of his husband's emotional light-support, light disperses far too quickly this far down to be of much use. So as the whale struggles and grows even darker, the alchemist takes this as a sign his efforts are working and continues to conjure and create heavier and heavier minerals. His magical abilities too are being sapped—especially since he has to switch between forms to hold his breath, and switch back—but dying with Ronin shining above him seems like such a ridiculous notion.
