Her laughter and her acceptance at being spontaneously swung around only makes his own laughter ring sweeter. He has missed this feeling of pride in one of his students, in seeing them succeed with even the most basic of forms. It's like watching a child take their first steps, and it makes him long for the younger pupils he'd had, the ones with shy grins and knobby knees. Ones he now has to pray are strong enough to be left alone in the world he'd departed without his guidance and protection.
It's just sobering enough to help reign in his excitement, clearing his gaze of ghosts as Phoebe speaks. He smiles comfortingly at her. "It will become less scary the more we repeat it. Do you want to keep trying this one or learn something defensive?" He'd be a terrible trainer if he didn't cover multiple bases, but there's so much he wants to be able to teach her to make her safer as quickly as possible. It's a difficult line to walk.
