Sunjata hums lightly under his breath, shooting a glance toward the young man. “Maybe try to give it a shot, give in for a bit. Nobody’s going to judge you if you do enjoy a piece of things here and there.” Sunjata shrugs. As much as he begrudged Halo for everything it had to offer, the people there were great. The sense of community among those in the Citadel were admirable. Still, he sips from the glass and leans back against the bar again as Korbin’s curious voice reaches him and Sunjata nods with a chuckle. “I do. In many ways, actually.”
But Korbin continues on, some sort of long sigh leaving the other Attuned, and as the words slip from the man’s lips… Well, Sunjata can’t help the slight surprise that bounds from him to Korbin through the bond – surprise and swift understanding. His head ducks a small amount as he looks into the glass in his hand, lips pursing slightly as he considers where to even fucking start with a statement like that.
“You and I are quite a lot alike, you know.” He finally manages after a few heartbeats of silence. “I’m pretty sure I’ve said the same thing once or twice. But then the people around me – your sister included – reminded me that perhaps it’s best to enjoy the time you get with people rather than to try and push them away for the fear of them leaving.” There’s a shadow of sorrow that cascades over him as he tries to swallow it down. “And pushing people away never quite protects them as much as you think it might.” He thinks of Maea with that, some form of guilt mixed with the frustration of it happening at all.
But he inhales deeply and tries to recover, inclining his head toward Korbin, steel gaze flickering toward the young man. “So it’s up to you to decide what you want to do. Do you take the chance and enjoy the memories or wallow away in a box the rest of your life?”
