"Oh, now you must tell me more! Is it a sordid affair or have you had your wild heart tamed by a wondrous romance? Is he a fantastic lover? Deeply charismatic? Breathtakingly handsome?" In the absence of knowing the man, Bastien was able to imagine all kinds of things.
Nate's awkward, slow admission was typical of people that had never allowed themselves to consider art: Bastien had heard it a million times. With such a perfect opening line, he just had to launch into one of his speeches.
"Oh, Nathaniel, no. The art you might see in a museum, while surely art of a form, is not at all all there is to see. Art that is preserved in such a fashion is the art that pleases the people that make the museum exhibits. And who are these people? Often those higher in society, those with the money and the big houses and the poor taste." His lip curled while he spoke of these people. "But if you look in the streets, if you look to the people, the average man: you will hear their songs, see their art. The stories they tell each other. Even a children's adventure story is art, something a human has created for the joy of another, of themselves. Nate, the clothes you wear on your back could be art. Do not limit yourself away from it."
