Crouched now at the edge of the docks, Jack let out a breath of relief as the mermaid (as it turned out) swam up towards the surface. There was no wonder or novelty in his expression; the captain dealt with the merfolk regularly in his line of business, and he found them to be reliable business partners, actually. Still, this wasn't about that right now.
"I did," he told the girl. "Wanted to get your attention. You've got my compass - that shiny thing you just found between the rocks." He nodded back to where she would have picked it up. "I'd like it back."
