The unceasing dark made it hard to do anything or travel anywhere within the jungle where he'd made his home, but the treehouse echoed with the silence now and Kel had swiftly found himself pacing, restless and uneasy there alone.
So he'd done something possibly quite foolish, and left. A lantern in hand, he'd followed the rope-path to the town and then skirted the edges, making his way to the beach and the by-now familiar lines of tiki torches spread along it. The ocean was a rumbling beast in the stygian gloom, audible but visible only as the faintest of reflected glimmers from the torches and the lantern Kel carried. He didn't dare go too far from the Port, but he found a rock on the sand to sit on at the base of a tiki torch, near enough for the ocean water to lap at his bare toes while he pulled out a sheaf of slender sticks and began to carve and shape them while the sea breeze tugged at his dark hair and let him breathe again.
Trying not to think about what could be lurking out there in the dark.
