"Your plan to attack the monsters would have killed all of our family, if it had gone ahead." And while he would rather none of them had died, of course, he thought this better than the massacre he had foreseen with a fight against the monsters.

Of course, Wessex managed to sweep out his feet: Sam was not and never had been a fighter or had quick reflexes. He fell to the ground on his back, raising the staff and his legs over himself to try and prevent her jumping on him as he got back upright.
