This is in reference to the ass Jack wants at the helm since it follows so nicely on the heels of the sexual images played out only a few nights before that included nearly this exact cast of characters. That it's Melita who goes up to assist is just icing on the cake.
Having no magic powerful enough for this sort of thing, Eloise snaps orders at the other men to drop the other sails. With the mainsail down they'll be bashed around a lot less, but with all of them down, they should glide on the waves rather than being bowled over by them.
"Like your lives depend on it." The navigator barks, untying herself and trying to make her way across the ship.
