Haai, from the foot of the bed, watches Zephyr work like a hawk, a bit of smoke seeping from her nose as she ensures that he’s only there to help as well. And then? Then things start to shift, as Sunjata’s heart calms down, as the sharp stinging pain in his chest dulls into quiet exhaustion, as his trembling in his hands pick up however brief and tears slip from his eyes.
Already he can hear his father hissing in his ear, or how weak he is, of how much a Senzaok should be under pressure but never cracking. Sunjata has always had far more empathy than his father, though, and it makes moments like this feel like hell.
He feels Zeph’s hand settle in his other hand, a small part of him confused by the gesture, but the present trauma absorbs it too much. There’s a cooling relief in the way Vai’s magic works, the tremors slowing until his body is simply just red, sweat slicked, and exhaustion weighs so heavily in his bones. He’s stiff, but he tries to relax — the way Vai leans in to kiss his hand, chiding him, reminds him of his mother in a beautifully painful type of way. But the tears stop, the cry of pain making way for heavy breathing, and Haai whimpering from where she sits at the foot of the bed, her head resting along his knee.
He doesn’t manage to speak, letting the medicine and healing work its way through his body, mending and soothing over and over again.
