Momentarily taken aback by the sudden embrace, Vai soon softens and holds him all the closer, her hand slipping out of Nate’s so she can better envelop him in a hug. ”I’ll stay as long as you need,” she assures him; it’s an impossible task in a practical sense, and the future of the house (and its burning down in flames) will prove Vai wrong. But for now she is here, and she has no intention of leaving Nate alone.
With fingers teasing through his damp hair, the witch doesn’t try to placate or soothe away the tears. Sometimes, she thinks, it’s better to let the dam break for a while, to let out all that has been held back for so long. And so they sit in fevered silence, waiting out this next wave of delirium until Nate can get his head above the surface again; however long it takes.
