"No," She blurts out, a moment of brief honesty. Her gaze wavers. "No, I'm fine." She glances away, as if she's just finishing the sentence, and that's when she actually feels his hand on hers. It's terribly obvious that something is amiss but, she doesn't want to talk about it. Not with him. She looks up with a half-hearted smile that attempts to convince him of her next statement, "It's nothing... Don't worry about it."
She'd made that decision on the night they met; the decision not to tell him about her past. Well, specific parts of it, at least. If she did talk about this... she'd be forced to explain why she was in such a situation that would present such a trauma, why someone would attack her like that, why it was... justified. She didn't know if he'd understand, if he'd be able to forgive her when she wasn't even able to forgive herself. And that thought might've led somewhere deeper, darker, and more selfish, had he not pulled her back in.
At first, she's hesitant and she's stiffening again, because it's almost impossible to relax after that. The fact he doesn't broach the issue further helps, though, and she slowly anchors herself to his comforting grip, moving to him and away from the wall. She can see that he's trying to read her face, so her eye contact dips away. Her hand gently squeezes around his. "Good timing, then," it's said quietly but, the anxiety has subsided from her voice.
At his announcement of a gift, she can't help but look up at him. Her expression furrows with pleasant surprise, "You.. did? That's funny. I got you something, too."
She turns from him and the gift he might try to give her, to go retrieve her bag. Because she needs a second. She carefully lifts up the bag onto a nearby counter and, as she's doing this, she attempts to resolve against the ghosts of a life no longer lived. Someone else has taken her place there, to face the consequences in her stead. The intrusive thoughts and memories grow fainter and more distant with each steadying breath. There is no reason she can't enjoy this night with Milo.
She whirls around to face him, presenting a small gift, wrapped in a thin leathery material. It's not tied, merely folded into a box-like shape. "So, I probably shouldn't have but, I grabbed something from the Hale Ka'aila. You said it's one of your favorite places... so I just thought... I dunno," she shrugs casually, trying to brush off the blush that starts up in her cheeks, "you might like having a piece of it with you."
And within the neat leather wrapping, he'll first find a little note. On it, there is a well-practiced drawing of a seagull - or maybe it's a hel. Upon seeing it revealed, her smile grows. Beneath the doodle, there's a simple handwritten message: 'Thank you'. She'd wanted to write more but, it felt sappy. So she settled on those two little words... and all of the implications that came with them.
Beneath the piece of paper, is a bracelet. It's handmade diligently. The cord that it's made out of is thin, but it's been braided through itself many times over to the point where the bracelet itself is quite substantial, it even has a little weight to it. It's also red, not unlike the color of the shirt he'd been wearing. A friendly little reminder. On it is an elongated, smooth chunk of seaglass, cleaned and polished to the best of her abilities. Holes have been {carefully} carved on either end of it, so that the rope could fasten through.
