Zariah was and you were a-ok with her.” She is of course, implying that Edy is wishy-washy and doesn’t have a leg to stand on in her opinions.
Maybe it’s the combination of mentioning Zariah and Edy’s next insult, but Wessex hears little beyond You’re the horror they remember. You’re what the Voice unleashed. It rings in her ears and her vision seems to swim, and she’s grasping at the inner seams of her clothing to try and steady herself. Time seems to stop, and Edy goes underwater.
Whether or not it’s true isn’t what’s killing her. It’s what was said. By someone she once cried over. Someone she needed in her corner. The fire goes out of her eyes, aggression out of her stance. She doesn’t so much collapse inward as slowly start to turn away. Whatever voice comes out of Wessex now is nothing like Edy’s ever heard before: robotic, small, numb. “Thanks for your input. If there’s anything else wrong, you can take it up with the Voice.”
Wessex stands there for a minute, looking weirdly useless and lost as she searches for a way to leave before remembering that she can teleport and doing just that.
Loki screeches her indignation at being left behind and then launches herself into the air, leaving Edy alone again.
