For a single breathless second, Pet lets himself be hopeful, let’s himself cling to the words like a buoy. But they don’t last. There’s a but, there’s always a but. And with each step they take beyond it, Pet’s stomach drops another handful of inches, into a deep pit.
Pet is already wounded, already lost adrift, alone, in a dark and unfamiliar sea. With Amalia it’s more exciting? That is simply a kick in the teeth, a knife driven into his back, the shove out into the deeps. It shouldn’t be possible for him to deaden anymore, and yet somehow he does, falling into that deathlike ascended stillness, his gaze so dostant he doesn’t even see Adam at all anymore.
Whatever words come after that don’t matter, don’t register at all. Pet knows that what he feels right now is bad, worse if he lets it point at people, though that is an issue he knows how to solve. Without a word, without so much as a backwards glance, Pet turns, and walks out of the room, out of the Slagveld entirely.
