Shackles of sand mixed with shadows rise from the ground. They coil around the monster's leg bones, affixing its ankles in place. They reach out for its tail, though keeping that part immobilized is not so easy. Even so, Maea 's channeling seems to have had its desired effect, as does Melita 's (though perhaps not in the way she intended).

Now for things which don't go to plan: The creature is more or less immobilized by Maea's spirits, and comprised of bone, there are many places for the grappling hook to lock against. Locking it in place with a tug, the dragoon is able to climb up onto the monster's spine. Shrouded in darkness, he looks like some strange reaper atop his undead mount. Though Nathaniel 's channeling was able to create a shield around him, it is not strong enough to withstand a blast from a demigod, muchless a blast boosted by Safrin herself.

Starbolts sing from Ronin, striking the immobilized monster (and the veiled Nathaniel).

Both fall motionless into the sands.
