All expectations make her heart feel numb
Success came in rounds, and while hers flickered, wafted, and waned, it ultimately came to nothing as she pierced and punctured something far too tough. Narrowing her eyes, she attempted one last time, and that was enough for her stubborn tenacity to meet a piece of obsidian equally mulish. And it won.
“Shit!” echoed from her mouth as the pickaxe broke, the serrated proportions snapping off, and a feral hiss following in rancorous pursuit. Snarling at the inanimate object, she heaved a molten sigh, and then proceeded to go search for another – lifting her head for anyone nearby. “There’s some tough spots over here,” she announced, glancing at the various others, uncertain if they’d be willing to aid, and hating the notion of asking. “If any of you already finished…,” ended on a mumble, and then sheepish, she grabbed hold of one more of the tools, and ambled back to her marked site.
