The nights have lost their minds
Above Sunjata's head, Nate's jaw works, grinding his first thoughts into softer words. "Yes," he says, "and no. Don't let them see it. Don't react. But it matters." There's more of an edge in Nate's voice than there usually is, the silver tongue sharpened into a cold blade. "Remember who said what. And don't forget."
A huff shakes Nate's chest, laughter that he tries to choke back out of some automatic respect for his husband, but he can't help it. With everything they've dealt with, everything they've gone through, teenage drama just seems so... benign. "I did." Nate very nearly says it like a boast, and maybe, if he hadn't already shared a handful of stories about his youth, maybe it would actually come across like one. "Even if it's bad, it won't last forever. Just," he purses his lips, not wanting to let his next words leave him for how useless they feel, "stay open, right? Give her the... the room to make her own choices, and..." Words trail off as Sunjata's arms wrap around him, Nate shifting to press his lips to his husband's head.
"Sonskyn," the one word is so soft it almost doesn't sound like anything at all, and yet so heavy it presses in against his husbands skin like yet another hand holding him close, "you don't have to apologize." Nate leans back again, pressing their foreheads together and waiting for Sunjata to meet his gaze. "Look at everything we've got. Everything we built. With you like this. They can't keep us down Sunny."
