They continued hiking up the slopes until the heat of the volcano started to melt the snow and leave the mountainside covered in hard, dark rock. They passed by a few fissures, keeping their distance from the smoke and steam that wafted out of them.
"There's some ash," she said, pointing to the ash-covered rocks besides one of the fissures. "Is this high enough?"
