The sun is rising at night over the Hollowed Grounds. The people taking sanctuary within the Temple know this cannot possibly be true, but the sparkbird's wings make it seem so. They huddle at the windows and gather in the doorways, breath held to await the judgement of the creature who soars overhead.
Among them, a man rolls his shoulders and reaches into the pockets of his jacket. Unlike the rabble around them, he is calm. He is resolute. Perhaps there is even a small smile hooking at the corner of his mouth.
This man is an Accepted, and he has been busy in the lead up to the war. For although the Ascended still welcome strangers into their region, not all of them come bearing gifts. Not the sort you'd want, anyway.
His faith makes it easy to detonate the item in his pockets - a gift from the gods. The real, Old Gods.
In the Outskirts, the explosion waves through the long grasses as a distant boom.
In the Temple, the world becomes a nightmare.
