and there she was, living, despite it all

It is hardly enough to be a balm for her heart. Years had past in the span of an afternoon. Now she doubted she was even old enough to be his mother - but he was her baby. Her baby. The child she had pined for for so long. Even as she felt anger rising, she had already forgiven him. How could she do anything else.

But the sudden screams have her arms around his shoulders in an instant, pulling him close to her chest as best she could. Her eyes scanned the water and spotted the fins of echo sharks. She sighed, arms loosening. "Just echo sharks." she said as soothingly as she could manage, unsure now how much of her comforting he needed now.

Her hands took him by the shoulders, holding him now in outstretched arms. She looked him over, every inch a gangly teen. Not a chubby cheek or pudgie finger left. Phoebe sighed shakily. "Why?" she asked again, drying her cheeks on the shoulders of her dress.
