The nails against his scalp and the tug of his curls sends a bolt of something hot and electric down the length of his spine, and Mateo swears he can practically see the blue-white flash of it out of the corner of his eye. Breath catching and fingers clutching her closer, it's of no surprise to onlookers that they seem wrapped up in each other; between the blissed-out light show and the pulse of Paige's body against his own, they very much are.
"Nate," he repeats, the name ringing no bells (or maybe distant ones that don't matter), and Mateo scrunches his nose and shrugs; clearly they are of no importance, otherwise they'd still be in Paige's life. Here and now, though, she's lighting up the room in a halo of gold that swims and wavers, and he hums his easy confirmation.
"There is only one way to find out, no?" he reasons, one hand splaying out against her lower back as if to catch her against him; at the same time the botanist leans in to eliminate the distance between them. His kiss mimics the heady and euphoric beat of the drugs and the music, lips soft and tongue writing the lyrics to songs that don't yet exist.
