And I came to, walking on the train tracks
How did I get here? And how do I get back?
Alys hid a smile as Sunjata made his selection, not surprised in the least when he chose the darker, more brooding deck. It was usually easy to tell which deck someone would be drawn to and, as a practiced seer, she was rarely surprised by a querent's choices. She pocketed the lighter deck, caressing the cards lightly as she did so as though to reassure them that they were still wanted, and then began to shuffle. "There are no expectations," she told Sunjata with a kind smile. "That is the beauty of the cards. They will tell you what you need to hear: no more, no less."

She riffled the cards, over and over, falling into a steady rhythm as she spoke. "Many believe that the cards foretell the future, but I find that to be misleading. I find them to be much more accurate in reading the past and the present; the future is always shifting, you see, whether because of choices we make or choices those around us make."

She switched to an overhand shuffle, the motion as second nature as breathing. The movement went on until she felt that the cards were ready, and then she slowed, cutting the deck once and pulling three cards from the top to place them face-down on the table. She set the rest of the deck aside. Flipping over the first card, she raised an eyebrow. "The past: the Three of Swords," she intoned. "Your heart has been pierced by the sharp blades of others’ hurtful words, actions and intentions, and they have inflicted intense emotions of pain, sadness, grief, and heartbreak."

It was not uncommon for Alys to pick up on little bits and pieces of the past through her readings, and Sunjata was no exception. Her heart squeezed painfully at the man's history, her gaze flickering to Hotaru and back. "The past can be painful," she said softly, wondering if the man across from her was truly ready for his to be revealed in front of his lover. "Why was it you, you wonder. There is no simple answer to that; sometimes we bear pain for no reason at all."

Then, because it felt right to say it: "Their deaths were not your fault."
I've been up all night, let's stay awake
Push it further, you know I'll never break
