They say blood makes you related but
loyalty makes you family
If Granger was an Attuned, then no, he likely couldn’t learn to summon creatures the way Loren could. However, there might actually be some good news for the boy. Smiling gently at the teen, the Launcleyn tried to come up with something to cheer Granger up. ”I have a friend. Once upon a time, all he could do was turn into a hawk. But he kept working, and working, and now he can turn into a manticore.” Granted, Loren wasn’t sure if Remi’s abilities had something to do with his strange status as a hybrid, but they didn’t know, so it didn’t feel wrong to give Granger some hope for the future.

Loren could also provide some reassurances in the present. ”Did you know that elephants are afraid of mice? Sometimes even the smallest of creatures can pack a mighty punch. Besides, I’ll bet you’re really good at getting in and out of places.” Indeed, a mouse could find all the little cracks in buildings, and were masters at finding their way into pantries. The summoner should know. He was in charge of the Manor, and constantly had to summon creatures to chase off rodents. And that wasn’t even getting into the colony of humming bats in the attic, but they were at least harmless.

Maybe he should get a cat.

On the subject of the Manor, however, well, Loren could definitely grant Granger’s request. ”Of course. I live in the Launceleyn Manor.” If the boy didn’t know where that was, Loren would provide directions. ”You’re always welcome to stop by for anything at all, a meal, some tea, to see the phoenix or any other creature really, and you’re even welcome to stay the night. We’ve got plenty of beds.” Although the Launceleyn didn’t know for sure, he felt pretty confident the teen didn’t have a permanent place to live. And, well, Loren had already taken in plenty of strays. One more wouldn’t make a huge difference.
