It seemed that Deimos was going to be in charge of digging, which suited the Launceleyn just fine. Seeing as the first thing they needed to do was keep the memory snow off the area—not that he was entirely certain just what memory snow was—he figured he would take care of that task, especially since everyone else seemed to be dithering about doing nothing. So, picking up a shovel, and having his ogre do the same, Loren had them both started tossing the snow aside Some of it began to try and roll back into place, and he frowned, blocked it, picked it up, and threw it farther. His arms soon began to ache with the strain of keeping snow off that did not want to be kept away. Guess he’d found out what memory snow was.

Send a heartbeat to the void that cries through you
Relive the pictures that have come to pass
Finally there was some action instead of ongoing trials or tribulations with a single tree; their efforts combined to access sleds and clamber along to where Jigano and Hotaru were waiting. He managed to not ignite a sheepish look on his face – but there was a point blank indication of exasperation pummeling through his senses, thrown directly to Hotaru (akin to a do not ask contortion, not wishing to relive the experience), before sighing and moving along. It could’ve gone better, but the inclinations had been accomplished, albeit in a bizarre, altered route.

Which left the posts and structuring of the Perch itself. He gave no indication of any oddities mustered by Jigano, aware of his discomfort with shifting. The Sword didn’t have the same apprehension, but the feelings were still strange, still foreign, still new, and he didn’t bear shame towards any of them, only a remarkable outlook that they even managed to happen at all. Instead of giving any rise or explanation to it, he acted as if it hadn’t occurred at all, purposefully not drawing attention to anything peculiar.

He listened, granting credence that perhaps this portion of the building would go better than the last, accepting the nod granted to him from age-old experiences, when they’d buried themselves into the walls of Amalia’s bakery. Back then, the Sword had believed they’d be proffering deliverance and liberation – presently, he could just tie the experience into this one, somehow becoming the master of seditious tunnels and rebellious digging. His eyes glanced back and forth from the support beams to the ground, pondering over the nature of how far they’d need to sink, how much ground would cover and hold. “It should be sufficient.” If not, they could always disentangle things and try again; he’d hold himself responsible for the measures.

So while Loren took up shoveling snow away, that seemed to be replicating or replacing itself by the moment, Deimos grabbed hold of his shovel, indicating his means and measures for the moment. Strength and fortitude marked his capability, shoving the flattened blade into the frozen earth, twisting and turning until he began to break apart the glacial edges. Hardened and nearly solidified, it was tougher work than previously noted, but once he’d carved and etched a series of broken splinters and fissures of dirt, he presumed the difficulty would subside. His muscles undulated and rippled, content and compliant for the work, eager to be doing something other than fumbling around in the woods.

Hotaru doesn't know much about the art or magic of shifting, and is content to let Jigano determine his own boundaries. Lashing up his equine form to the harness and then the sled is easy going, though her hands tremble whenever she touches his warm sides. It makes her ache with a loss she can scarcely comprehend, but it has no place or purpose here and as such is squashed down.

When they all reconvene, she can't help her wild grin towards Deimos at his begging, exasperated look when they arrive with only one tree. She won't tease him yet, but they both know at least one comment is brewing in her gilded mouth. She simply can't help it, much like an annoying younger sibling.

Of course as tasks are handed out, all the fun ones are taken immediately, and so the woman huffs - though she doesn't mind all that much, a show is required of course - and picks up her axe yet again. If nobody else would work with Jigano, she supposed she would be his company yet again. Smiling at him, she shrugs at his question of preference. The other two had silently picked their tasks - which, unsurprising - so there wasn't exactly anything she could say to him. Instead she gets to work, chopping into the wood to create concave areas for the logs to rest. At least she's gonna have some kick-ass biceps if Caido ends up needing this shit regularly.

It seemed their luck was finally turning as they set to their chosen tasks with good intentions, and the perch began to come together. Loren might have been meeting memory snow for the first time, but he used his excellent dexterity and endurance to good effect, keeping the troublesome substance at bay. Perhaps because he was quicker on his feet, or simply closer to the ground than his ogre, but the mage was more adept at defending the patch of ground they had cleared. Twice the snow made it past the ogre’s shovel, but each time Loren quickly stepped in to recover the lost ground, and between the two of them they were able to let Deimos work in peace.

Jigano had nodded to the Sword as he gave his approval of the depth they would need for the perch’s stability. Deimos had strength enough and more for such a task, though even his mighty endurance was taxed by the hard-frozen ground that gave way only reluctantly beneath his shovel. The first hole went slowly, with a few small setbacks as rocks and buried paving stones resisted his attempts to dig down, chipping the shovel’s blade but ultimately overcome by a combination of raw power and perseverance. Thankfully for everyone (especially the hard-working Loren), the second hole went much faster, and with far fewer pauses to remove debris.

Hotaru and Jigano were becoming quite the team as they worked in companionable silence side-by-side, cutting and roughly shaping the tops of the support posts to concave dips to better secure the crossbeam. The wood was hard and healthy, difficult to shape with any finesse, but for the inelegant notches they needed they were able to wrestle the lumber to their wills. Hotaru’s strength continued to be useful in this endeavor, as in the ones before. With two of them at the task it went fast enough that when they finished Jigano began to strip the bark from the crossbeam, making it roughly smooth just as Deimos finished the post holes.

”Let’s get the crossbeam lashing into place down here, so we can lift it all in one go,” the bard decided as he surveyed what was left to do. They were getting close, and it was starting to come together – literally! He retrieved a bag he had stashed there earlier that morning, containing rope and leather bindings for securing the crossbeam to the two posts, tossing it to Deimos as he nodded to Loren. ”I can take over shoveling the memory snow away for a bit if the three of you can maneuver the sleds into position and secure the beam to the posts.”

We’re getting close!

Position the sleds so the crossbeam fits into the notches at the tops of the posts, and the bottom of the posts are lined up with the holes!
Lash the crossbeam into place with leather and rope!
Assist with either of the above tasks or help Jigano shovel!

No posting order this round!

Relive the pictures that have come to pass
Not a simple complaint or note of fatigue brindled its way past his teeth or tongue, lashing them altogether on the notches of his clenched jaw, steady and stalwart despite setback after setback. Steadfast determination melded its way along his brow, a chiseled contortion both Reaper and Sword would have been renowned for, tenacious, emboldened, obstinate even when the rest of the world asked him to cease and desist. He’d long since shrugged off his furs, jacket, and remained in thinner layers, muscles undulated, content, growing molten with each ensuing movement. The beast had established a rhythm by the time he’d finished the first hole, and the second came easier, power, precision, and prowess clattering its way through frozen surfaces and nonchalant rocks. It was almost a dare, almost a defiant order, to see if the ice would crumble beneath his wake again, if it would succumb to another version of the war-torn sovereign; only a glimmer of a smirk held along his lips when the job was complete, the holes dug, hands wiping away at any sweat and salt collecting on his features.

He nodded at Loren and his ogre, grateful he’d had any opportunity to finish the occupation at all. Placing his shovel down, he listened to the next set of directions, taking hold of the rope and leather bindings Jigano tossed his way. The depths of his eyes flickered towards the aforementioned, waiting timber, throwing the rope and leather over his shoulder, and motioning towards the sleds, intending to grab hold of one, and follow through on the plan, attempting to secure one set of crossbeams together with the cords, proffering the lines and tethers to anyone else taking on the same positions.

This task just seemed to go on and on. Unfortunately, Loren was far more used to destructive uses of his power than constructive ones. Still, it was easy enough to take the cords Deimos proffered. Seeing as the summoner was physically quite weak, he ordered his ogre to pull the other sled so that everything was perfectly in place, not trusting his own strength of arms to do the trick. Then the Launceleyn secured the rest of the lashings. Again, given how weak he was, he used his telekinesis to pull the knots as tight as he dared. After that, he glanced over at the rest of the group to see what, if anything, they needed to do next. Hopefully they were nearing the end of this task, because all this magic was starting to drain his reserves. They were stronger than they’d ever been, but certainly not limitless, and he figured he might need to summon a Spark Bird at the end of this.

The task continues on, and Hotaru spends a moment thanking her mother for the stamina she'd given her. While she may not be very impressive by way of bulk or brute strength, at least she could continue for hours. Speaking of such, she leaves the lashing and moving to Deimos and Loren, chest heaving as she catches her breath while fetching a shovel. If nothing else, she has at least proven to herself that Jigano - for all his curiosity to her regarding his interaction with Deimos - is a good companion to work alongside. Quiet, intent, unswayed in his focus on the task at hand. While Hotaru would certainly seek him out later out of curiosity for his character, at least he didn't jabber her ear off while they worked. Though if he could, and still had the breath to do so, she'd be mightily impressed.

The snow is odd, and its replication properties a tad confounding, but she's here to work not question nature. Instead she digs the head of the shovel into the snow, keeping a steady pace alongside Jigano. If they could hurry it up so she could get home - get dry, get warm - that would be fantastic. As important as she knew this job to be, they had been at it for hours now, and soon their collective exhaustion would lead to hunger pains, frustration, irritation...Hotaru would not be merciful in her cutting words if she was kept from her meals, no sir.

Finally, a task was completed without difficulty. Deimos and Loren 's ogre positioned the sleds and the men were able to secure the crossbeam snugly into place, the leather ties strong and supple thanks to Rory's skills and the extra rope providing just that little extra bit of stability - and long enough to help them raise the structure. Jigano had not forgotten how the ropes last year had ended up being their salvation, allowing them to right the fractured T-post that had been built by the barrierfolk and then broken by the monsters. They were constructing what he hoped would be a sturdier structure this year, but still the ropes remained - just in case someone had to come outside again to lift the crossbeam back into place. The gear would here and waiting if it was needed, at least.

Hotaru and Jigano were able to keep the post holes clear. The work was at least not as taxing on their strength as chopping the tree down and hauling it back had been, but it was never-ending - at least for the moment. They were successful in their endeavors, however, no stubborn memory snow making it into the pits Deimos had dug to anchor their perch in. Blight-struck and subdued, even with the surly temper tantrum of the morning gone, Jigano was far less than his usual loquacious self, something Hotaru might discover when next they met. For today, however, he was largely quiet and saved his breath for the work at hand, appreciating more and more the blond woman's steady competence and efficiency with each task they completed together.

As soon as the crossbeam was secure, Jigano hurried to wave his companions into position. "Two on each side," he called. " Loren , can your ogre lift the crossbeam gently? Tip it up while we control the slide of the posts into the holes." He joined Hotaru with a ghost of a smile for the lovely valkyrie as they all grabbed and pulled, shifting the heavy, sturdy structure forward and tipping it into the prepared pits, racing the memory snow to get it positioned. It was a near thing, but the perch slotted into place with a creak and thud, shuddering as it settled and stood firm.

Jigano looked around at those who had helped, pride and gratitude flickering through the blight-darkness in his eyes, and gave them all a small bow. "Thank you," he said quietly. "I couldn't have done this without you. All that's left is to fill in around the edges of the posts and tie up the ropes so the monsters can't use them to try and pull it over, and we'll be done."

This is it! The end of the PQ! We made it! Big Grin

Feel free to post a final time packing dirt in firmly around the post holes, tidying up the ropes, or whatever else you can think of that needs doing! And then you'll be freeeee!

Thankfully, they managed to actually put together the perch without further incident. Given how difficult it had been, everyone seemed surprised by that result. Loren did as Jigano asked: the summoner’s ogre lifted with only a fraction of its strength, raising the cross-beam as the rest of them moved the perch into the holes. Nodding in acknowledgement of the bard’s thanks, the Launceleyn finally dismissed his ogre and set to work on packing dirt tightly into the holes. He figured those who’d been here before would have a better sense of what to do with the ropes, so he stuck to what he knew. When he finished, he stood, dusting off his hands. Hopefully they were done for now.

The finality eventually crawled in, when some portions of his sides ached and his muscles persisted; but no bone-weary or deep exhaustion. Perhaps the mere segments of a job completed, rendered in time, despite setback after setback, collision after collision. The structure managed to slide its way into place, and he returned to shoveling duties quickly thereafter, sifting and packing the dirt back around the post holes, much as Loren committed to, and then resolved to tidying up some of the ropes, winding them along and hopefully out of reach of whatever baleful things intended to roam.

Then it seemed to be done, over, not nearly as arduous as the beginning stages. His eyes flickered to the sleds, intending to let any of those who wanted the runners and their cart assemblage to keep them, merely taking hold of his in efforts to drag it back home, put it to use in future endeavors. The monolith collected anything else he’d left behind too – tools, bag, jacket and furs shed some time before – bending his neck in a solid nod towards the Sage. “You are welcome.” Then he shrugged, muscles growing taut with their lack of use now, stretching out the rest of his contortions, before proffering Hotaru a mischievous smile, and starting the journey back to his residence.

The end comes swiftly after that, not that it's swift enough considering how long and hard they have been laboring. Sweat collects on her brow and in the dip of her clavicle, cooling quickly in the frigid air. It's easy to settle into a rhythm alongside Jigano, picking up on opposite strokes as they work in tandem. There's not much she can do by way of helping lift the poles, but the men seem to have it well enough in hand.

Packing the dirt is something she can do though, and she uses her last burst of energy to ensure it's packed down firmly. When Hotaru rises, she hears Jigano's words of gratitude and turns to look at him, a smile on her face. "You're welcome." She'd say 'any time's but frankly she feels kinda gross. Deimos' mischievous look is returned by a scrunched face and a mouth that twitches into a helpless grin, and she jogs after him as he departs, fully intending on stealing his fireplace and food.
