He sits on the blanket but it's really not as close as it should be, and his eyes are distant, and his face is grimacing. He looks worse than I've seen him after any fight, black rimmed and bloodshot. What has this place done to him? But his question is more concerning than any physical symptoms, and the color drains from my face as he asks it, dread settling like lead in the pit of my stomach. "What kind of question is that?" Of course I know. It's the only thing I'm certain of, the only thing I've ever been certain of, and he knows this, so why the fuck would he ask?
Something is wrong, and I'm going to find out what it is so we can fix it and move past it and get on with our new lives. I only just got him back, and I refuse to lose again.
