Here was the chance Amun had been praying for. The chance to get out, unscathed, the chance to leave this madness far behind him. It would be so easy to run away from all this. It was the smart thing to do—this wasn’t his fight, voice in his head calling him child notwithstanding—and it was all his instincts were clamoring for him to do.
So he should do it.
But his thoughts flashed to Wessex, and what might happen if it got out in the Hollowed Grounds that he’d abandoned the queen. Beyond that, if she survived this fight, then she’d probably punish him. And if she didn’t, he’d have a lot of explaining to do. Then he thought about Blue Eyes, who’d taken a hit for him and then whose back he’d abandoned. About the dead guy, who hadn’t even had a chance to defend himself.
On the flip side of that coin, it was always better to ask forgiveness than permission, and if the rest of these folks somehow survived this ordeal, he could probably talk them around. He was weak, not a fighter, and didn’t know what he was doing here, and if he’d known what was to come he would’ve stayed far away to begin with. That had to be explanation enough. Plus, he couldn't die, only be killed, so he'd have many lifetimes to get past this day, assuming he survived that long. That didn't seem likely if he stuck around this fucking tree for much longer. ”Alright, I’ll go. Thanks mate. I really appreciate it.” He ran past the unarmed man, trying to get as far away from this insanity as possible.
