Love mends even the broken parts

The sea shanties, on the other hand, were an interesting distraction, and despite himself he found himself humming along to the choruses now and then. Then came the comment and nudge about the golem—it was obviously about sex, thanks stranger, the Launceleyn got it—and it was all he could do not to roll his eyes. ”If you think that’s big, you’re in for some surprises.” Indeed, he could summon much larger creatures. Also, yes, it was a dick joke. Thankfully, Loren’s efforts succeeded in fixing the sack. The other man’s efforts to steal some apples didn’t go unnoticed, but the summoner let it happen. The stranger needed to eat as badly as the Launceleyn did.
When they returned, Melita was entirely too cheerful, especially because he was pretty sure the woman still hated him. He trailed behind at the back of the group as they made their way to the trees, then halted as she gave them their instructions. Apparently, they were supposed to improvise. Not particularly skilled or interested in that (and not particularly wanting to stay near Melita, in case), Loren meandered off to one side, as far as he dared. Then he stood there, and tried to think of the things that made him happy.
It was a depressingly short list: Astra topped it, of course. Then Jace, then Beatrix. Finally, books. Great. He was as sad and lonely as he’d always feared. Focusing on his luxere, who had been adoringly by his side this whole time, he gave her an affectionate head rub, then began singing her a nonsense lullaby, hoping she’d enjoy it. She did, of course, but she loved everything he did, and he had no idea if the rest of the herd would like it as well.
