Sam ran downstairs at the sound of crackling flames and screams, unsure what had happened but knowing whatever it was, it sparked panic in his chest. Actually seeing it though, he pushed his hands up into his hair, staring at the flames licking around the guild and Remi running running past, likely searching for Aoife. Or grieve all that we thought we’d do
Immediately in his heart he knew this was his fault. Marked, they had said, and this was what they had meant. He'd brought this on the guild and...and...maybe there was a way to fix it....
Rexanna had told him not to make himself a sacrificial lamb, and perhaps he could have agreed for one person. But for this many? For Remi and Ronin? He had seen the panic in the Alchemist's eyes. No, he had started this and besides, he hardly deserved to live anyway. Sam began to take slow measured steps toward the fire, inching towards a death he felt he was obligated to take.
