She has wanted this moment.
She has feared this moment.
She has dreamt of this moment.
(But she never thought it would be--)
It is so much bigger, so much colder, so much more than she ever dreamed. Terrible and wonderful, infinite and finite. She had never known how deep the snow could be, how close the earth could come to the sky (could she touch the heavens if she only tried, reach out and fly up and vanish into cosmos?). Her dark eyes are wide in awe and fear as she follows her family through the frozen expanse (so much ice, so much snow, the world awash in white as far as the eye can see and beyond--), her mental voice subdued as she tries to corral the anxiety that pulses through her veins.
At least the girl is not alone. At least she has Jyoti, blissfully happy and endlessly enthused. At least she has Kiada, stubborn and stalwart, fire in the night.
At least she has Deimos, leading the way through the frozen expanse, more at home than she has ever seen him, proud in feathers, regal and poised.
She feels small beside them, as though she may vanish into the snow and be lost, forgotten, drown in the cold--
Ready? he asks, and though she is not the owl bobs her head. Ready.
