But his childhood home had never truly felt like home, with its blank walls and no personal touches until after he’d won his trial. Just in case – a protection for the parents just in case he perished on the trial’s muddy earth. It was a cold, cold upbringing, despite how many times his mother had broken his father’s rules on it all to spend time with him, to give him little things here and there he could hide away and keep.

I’m afraid it’s a bit too cold for me.” Among other reasons – reasons that still haunt him at night, to see Lusea’s head among the snow, unseeing eyes open to the world, frozen to the bone and blackening depths of her skin from the frost.
