He was no fool - every time they chose to cross it there was a chance that something terrible could happen, even if it wasn't the fucking volcano erupting. There were stories about that damned place, ones that Jack did not intend to confirm. Add the pressing issue of the storm and he rightly thought his concentration deserved to be elsewhere.
