Sunjata had only ever known Deimos as the General and the Sword. Nothing of the Reaper, nothing of the past history that connected him and Hotaru and so many that he’d already interacted with in one way or another. And with it, he doesn’t notice what kind of shift Deimos is taking as he takes to silence, imagining it was simply normal, though he should know better based off their previous conversation, how close Hotaru was with the man… And how much Sunjata had effectively fucked everything up. So he gnaws on the inside of his cheek, scouting the opposite side of the hedges in the center of the labyrinth, wondering if maybe – just maybe – he was right and they were in the center.
He almost exhales a rattling, exhausted breath when Deimos claims to have found it, and Haai and him slip away from their own exploration – Haai growling at the squirrels that threatened to shout at them – to come stand beside the General and inspect the herb with interest. “How much do you need?” He asks quietly, reaching out to pluck another from the bundle, wondering if perhaps it might come in handy in any other ways.
