He denied wanting it, yet it still remained on his finger. He said he didn't want the marriage, but clung to it like it was the only thing in the world that actually mattered. As if he could only live by the failure of something that was doomed to end before it ever begun.
"So you said."
Maea had heard his arguments, remembered them keenly but did not stress her own opinions again. It would do nothing to change his mind, probably only make him dig his heels in deeper. Like a stubborn sheep desperately clinging to a faded patch of grass, when the whole of the meadow waited beyond the hill. Her shrug was non-committal, leaving it entirely to him if the trinket would become the shackle to hold him back. Her eyes did move from the simple sapphire band to the river behind his back, a little meaningfully. The waters ran deep already, full of their secrets. Perhaps, it could hold more than that if he only wished it.
But she never voiced those thoughts, and wouldn't push him. Maea didn't like to make people choose, like there were only two truths to the world. All she offered was an option. An opportunity... and it was a far sight more than she'd ever extended to anyone else. It had been a very nice kiss. But friendship was good enough too, and might last longer than this fickle little flame.
Speaking of kisses, his question about it made her blush even deeper. Her gaze darted away, trailed erratically over everything but Sunjata as she fought to contain the embarrassment again. By some miracle she kept from squirming like the budding teen he made her feel, and nodded. "Was it that obvious?" she mumbled, if possible even more shy about it now than before she'd joined him in the water.
"So you said."
