Did he not feel the pain at all? Maea didn't understand how he could face it so calmly. Her skin felt raw and prickly where the ice had punctured it, like she'd rolled in nettles. She only had time to get up on her knees before he had thrust away the water again, leaving him scalded but not so much that it made him slow. Again the water came blasting out from him, and this time she couldn't block it in time. Maea was pummeled by it, battered and half choked as she struggled to breathe.
A lashing out of her mind towards the surging liquids slammed up a barrier of ice, a thick wall that hopefully would stave him off while she coughed and spluttered and tried to catch her breath. She longed for her boot knife, for the hidden kind of weapon that might take him by surprise. But her feet were bare and the twin blades Sunjata had gifted her with were safely tucked away in her room, far out of reach.
Improvising, Maea shaped some of the ice into the semblance of daggers instead. Behind the wall, she got to her feet and then rapidly raised the temperture of the ice from within, dissolving it into steam; once the pressure became too much the barrier exploded, sending large chunks of ice flying all over the roof.
In the subsequent haze of steam and mist and flying debris, the girl leaped out at Loren slightly from the side, aiming to stab one of the daggers into his side while the other reached down low to cut towards his knee, just like she had once in a very different sparring match. She'd wielded wooden daggers then, not ice. This time they might cut, should she actually reach him.
