The bard wasn't looking to get hit, but he knew that if something went wrong and he did, he could at least Heal himself quickly. That was only in the worst-case scenario, though, and with the way Quanil was gripping the staff he didn't think he'd have to worry about it too hard. "Keep that shoulder-width distance between your hands," he called as his young friend took their stance. "You're choking up on it too much. You won't have much control over the aim that way."
