Quanil had actually wanted to learn how to defend themselves and others without a weapon; they'd taken up the staff just because the provost had insisted he wasn't a proper teacher for unarmed combat.
There were so many things they could say to her in response to her request, but it was that last line - and that last look - that decided what words would actually come out.
