"As for the farms, they're a nuisance out there as well. It's especially bad for us; we grow squash." She grinned. "You think you're just checking up on the crop and then SNAP. We've taken to prodding them gently with the other end of the hoe this time of year, just to be sure. But it's usually just one or two, if they see an opportunity. I've never had them knock me down, for sure. I wasn't really paying attention this time... though I'm not sure that's a great defense."
Once her ankle was healed, she headed off in the direction she'd accidentally flung her other shoe, keeping an eye out as she walked for gourd guts, animal scat, or pointy rocks.
