She waited patiently as he stood silent, thinking, giving him the time he needed. It was so much better to wait and hear the real truth, than to rush along and realize it had all been a lie.
"I wouldn't say I haven't thought of it at all."
No big promises. No gushing confession. For once, the lackluster, blunt honesty of the statement - passing thoughts, distracted musings, nothing terribly serious - comforted her deeply. Not a no, not a yes. Something in between and grey and all the more real for it. Her gaze went to the ground between them, not from sadness or bashfulness, but in thought. After a moment of her own contemplation, she reached out, fingers gently, loosely wrapping around his. Almost another question in a sense - would he pull away, or complete the gesture? "I was in a bad place when you let me decide what was best for me at that wedding. What's so different now?" she said softly, a light laugh parting her lips as she glanced up at him, amused. "You are helping me carry my baggage...I can help you carry yours." And wasn't that really how it was supposed to be? Two imperfect, damage people, balancing and healing each other's hurts? Standing strong when the other fell? "Your friendship is enough for me too but...but I'd like to see...to try...just one string at a time?" she said, laying it out in the open, the crux of her musings since that day.
What if that had been her chance, and she had cut the strings for good?
