I still haven't tried swimming in these waters yet, the dragon-bard admitted, a hint of embarrassment in his mental tone. They look so much wilder than the Oasis, and Numeria was an inland country... Which meant all his previous experience swimming had been done in lakes or ponds, some of which had seemed plenty deep enough at the time, but compared to the ocean they were mere kiddie pools.
For all his grace in other situations, it seemed that his dragon shape always gave him the most trouble to control. He might not have been intending to swim in the ocean even yet, but his curiosity led him to a sound dunking that gave him no choice in the matter. He was lucky that the surf wasn't too rough in this area, the mild weather and shallow waters soothing some of the sea's more rambunctious tides.
Ahhh... I... think I might live, he admitted sheepishly, all four legs beginning to paddle instinctively, treading the water to stay afloat though the salten sea and his own full lungs did an admirable job keeping his hollow-boned body atop the waves rather than beneath them. I expected to sink, like I would in the Oasis. But I hardly have to work at all to stay up-- A slightly larger swell surprised him, lifting him up and swamping over his wings and bank and he scrambled a bit, dog-paddling with renewed vigor to try and reorient himself into the coming waves rather than broadside to them.
