"And yet! Still none of them measure up to the real thing. There used to be a man in Venice who swore he could capture a portrait so real you would not know if he had included the sitter's soul in his tools." He'd been a cocky asshole, but Bastien had admired the artistic bragging if nothing else. "...He couldn't, but what an ability to have that would be!"
Staring at the ceiling and holding Rexanna close, he wondered if the child would change this: the easy happiness, the quiet afternoons together. Would it be a different kind of joy, or the end of it?
